Differential, anyone know what diff this is?
I pulled this out of a "JDM" S1 tranny that was built by a local drag racer, supposedly it's an OEM differential, but I don't have a clue.
Here is the teeth count of all of the gears that were inside the tranny:
1st main, 38 teeth
1st counter, 12 teeth
2nd main, 39 teeth
2nd counter, 19 teeth
3rd main, 34 teeth
3rd counter, 24 teeth
4th main, 32 teeth
4th counter, 29 teeth
5th main, 27 teeth
5th counter, 31 teeth
Differential, 64 teeth
Final drive, 15 teeth
So...here are the gear ratios:
1st - 3.166
2nd - 2.052
3rd - 1.416
4th - 1.103
5th - 0.871
Final Drive - 4.266

My Quaife didn't look like that...
My Quaife didn't look like that...
thats the gearing of a Y1 transmission, the s1 has a 4.4 final drive.
Im not completely certain, but that looks like a stock cable tranny LSD to me

That's definitely a Quaife. I've had one before, bought brand new, and it looked exactly like that. It was for an S1 tranny.

It looks like a quaife except for the housing...
Here's a view of the quaife in my built up J1 transmission:

I'd say it's a quaife...or uses quaife internals.

thats what i thought the Y1 diff looked like, but i fugured maybe he got a freak tranny.
isnt the stock Y1 diff viscous?
that gearing is definitly the Y1 gearing, maybe a different ring gear and lsd was swapped into it.

Forgot the camera when we went to the shop...the car is almost back together, way too much crap to do when you split 3 trannies, change diffs, fix a broken synchro, put it together, put it on the car, only to find that it isn't working right
Took the tranny back off the car, broke open the case, and fixed the broken synchro...all on top of installing 11.1" rotors in the front, itr calipers, speed bleeders, new master cylinder, booster(pain in the ******* ***), and prop valve...just a few things left to finish up tomorrow

is there any way possible a quaife lsd in a s1/j1/y1 could have that rod in the middle between the spider gears? i was 'assured' its a quiafe but it has the identical rod as my usdm S1 which obviously is an open differential.
however, i noticed that when i hold that outer ring (with the 4 notches) still, i can still turn the input shaft and the ring inside with the splines turns with it. with my S1, if i hold that outer ring, i cannot turn the input shaft. im going to take off the cover today, but if it doesnt have the quaife stamp on it, it doesnt necessarily mean it's NOT a quaife does it?
i guess if it has the big gaping holes on both sides i know its stock

No. Quaifes do not have the pin.

Not on the b18c1 engines.

I just bought a set of gears from a guy off ebay. He didn't know much about anything(he gave me the differential for free). His car hit a tree and broke the tranny case. He had a shop take the tranny out and apart. He looked for a case but couldn't find one so he sold the gears. I bought the gears and triied to put them in a case a have and the diff. doesn't fit right so I put a regular diff. in because a guy needed a trans. I counted the gears (3rd) and they are gsr gears. The guy I bought the stuff off of lives in Canada. I know there are US type r's, JDM type r's and canadian type r's so why is it not possible to be a canadian gsr????

Not sure about Canada but in JDM land the GSR's had an optional torque biasing differential. I've got one in my B18C1 swap... the lock-up isn't as good as the ITR diff but it's better than nothing and was only an extra $250 or so on top of the regular engine/tranny/swap price.
Christian, who more and more thinks that a clutch pack diff is in his future...

try out a quaiffe first. they're pretty agressive, you'd be surprised. much more so than the stock itr lsd. I would only go with a clutch pack for a full race car, but that's just me.

Good point.
I'm planning on retiring the hatch from street duty fairly soon so the streetability issue won't factor into my purchase
