Passing is allowed under the debris (track condition) flag. I know because on my flag test for the SCCA drivers school, I wrote down that passing wasn't advised (because, really, geez, if there's oil on the track, you probably need to take it easy through that turn!), and they actually docked a point for it.

For driving schools, you generally regard a debris flag as a yellow. No passing until the next manned worker station not displaying a flag.

Uh, that'd be me. My apologies to all involved as I see in Tarheel's rules, they state "no passing" under a debris flag.

As the debris flag pass-giver Matt, I will certainly know that going forward. FWIW, at the time, I made no association between a debris flag and a yellow (that isn't something that has been drilled into my head but I will definately know it going forward). I thought that coasting off-line down the front straight and giving a point by was safe and clear - my mistake since that was inadvisible. I do wish that was verbalized as I now feel uncomfortable with my misunderstanding - I have also learned a valuable lesson in reading the event's rules as they may differ from my assumption. Glad I know it now, pissed I was reason for the learning.

Thanks for the education on this guys and gals.

Edit: point by was correctly not taken

I see now. They never went over that with instructors. That's a student classroom thing. I'll tell Mark and John they need to hit that with instructors next time to be sure we're all on the same page.

Good points.

With my SCCA background being that a debris flag was for informational purposes only, I would have taken the pass if Adam had pointed me by.
Yes... everyone should read the "local rules," but knowing that most folks don't, it does need to be verbally addressed in the meeting.
