Communicators
Im Instructing Melissa @ Roebling this weekend. I need to get ahold of some sort of communicator, but dont want to spend alot for the chatter box. I came across that at my local Motorcycle dealer.
My question is, Is this rig trash? I was told by the guy at the motorcycle shop that they were, and he doesnt know why they are still around. I tried to explain to him that im gonna hardly Ever use it and its for Automotive use, not for bike riding

I wouldn't waste my money on it. It won't be long before your student rips the glued on sponge foam off of it or yanks the wires from the ear piece trying to pull it out of his helmet.
The chatterbox isn't so great either, but I think you'll get better use out of it for the money.

I have the cheapo communicator shown in the link. Yeah the microphone sponge things tend to come off but what the hell. I don't have problems with students yanking the wire from the communicator. Man I hope they are coordinated and smart enough to not do that or at least plug it back in. The cheapo unit slides up into the helmet easier than the chatterbox. I have used the cheapo unit the last two years with DE students and give it (for the money) a

I use a chatterbox... have to tape up the wires coming out of the headset so they dont pull out, but other than that its been fantastic.

Don't bother. It's junk. I'm on my second one, I've patched the wires twice and had a friend do it another time, and it's still junk.
As careful as you might be pulling the thing out of your helmet, your students won't be. And you don't always hand the student the same earpiece every time, so they both will stop working.
No more for me. I'm biding my time until 2005 when I get a. a new helmet, and b. a chatterbox.

Oh, and the box is mounted on my helmet, and the earpeices/mic are mounted in the helmet. All I do is hand the student their headset and plug it into the box.... its so easy.
Trash.
Used both. Love the chatterbox.
You'll go through 5 of those things before even 1 chatterbox will give you problems.
I have my Chatterbox attached to the side of my helmet like .RJ... simple as drunk calculus.

I've got an extra HJC setup for sale. Back at the begining of the season I bought one but they sent me the same order twice, figured it would be easier to sell to a fellow instructor then mess with return shipping, so far everyone already has one.
Brand new, never been used but taken out of the box and charged up for guy who backed out of purchasing. HJC 50 Tandem Pro, 2 student headsets, 1 full face stereo leave-in headset $130 plus shipping.

If you get a chatterbox with a student headset, the first thing I would do is to open the earpiece and put epoxy on the bendy piece that holds the mic wires. I had both of mine come loose. Epoxy fixed the issue and they work great!! Now you can tug on them all you want and no worries.

While it isn't the greatest, I have a new, never used, Nady PMC-3 communicator. It's essentially the same as the PMC2, except it has a built in FM radio.
I'd be happy let it go for $35 plus shipping.

wish you could have posted earlier, i would have jumped right on it.. I went ahead and ordered the Nady PMC2, I will see how it goes and give my opinion on it later down the road. Like i said, i prolly will hardly ever use it, so it would be a waste of money either way

as an hpde student, please please please do not buy a cheap communicator, yelling works better. i run solo, but i hadn't driven on the track in a while so i requested an instructor my first session this past weekend. he had the lousiest pos communicator ever that it actually detracted from my driving, constant loud static with some occasional talking that i had to try and deciper. i beg all instructors, please buy the chatterbox or don't buy at all. thanks
I notice this tendancy to suggest only to instructors that they buy an intercom for their students' benefit. I would suggest that just as many newbies or students should buy an intercom. I liken it to coming to class prepared to learn with a pencil and notebook.
I would also agree that a good quality intercom is infinitely more useful and helpful than one that makes noise, comes apart and generally gets in the way of a good track session.

I wish instructors were required to use a decent intercom system. When I was a student, I had instructors yelling stuff but I couldn't hear what they were saying. In some cars it is fine not to have one, but in many others it is very, very helpful.
I bought a NADY unit (not sure which off hand) and have been using it for the past two years with my students. I've never experienced any issues and it is very easy to use / set-up. I have also had many students tell me that it was so much better using that then yelling back and forth - often times a student really has to concentrate on what is being said and takes away from their concentration on driving.
I also took an advanced instruction course last year. We did not have a communication system for internal car use - I would not participate again in a course that did not have one.
