I'd heard that and was then corrected that TOURING (not Improved Touring) would require nascar bars. I've also heard that ERW tubing is still legal for 2003 but will be illegal in 04.

My cage builder said nascar bars were mandatory on the drivers side now. Hmmm....
ERW cage material is not allowed in new cars without logbooks in the SCCA as of 1-1-03. Straight from the horses mouth.

File under "conflicting information."

I know this *was* the case, but subsequently heard that the cage vendors bitched (rightly so IMO) because they had ERW stuff still on the shelf.

Where's Kirk?

no, not mandatory at all. heck, rules say you dont even need ANY doorbar on the passenger side.

yeah, there was a note that they would investigate pushing back the 1/03 deadline due to vendor overstock, but no official change from that date. so far, any new logbook as of last month needs DOM. HOWEVER, NASA has set their changeover date to 4/03.

There was an update to the rule because vendors still had ERW cages in stock.

So ERW is safe as long as the dealers have it in stock. OK

DOM is required... look toward the bottom of this topic. I spoke with the SCCA directly about it.

I was there and understood the same when he said that John.... his statement was to the effect of.... "X's are only legal if you can prove to the regional tech's that nascar style door bars were close to impossible to install with out comprimising the chassis for safety or rules reasons."

Remember this is from a builder not an SCCA rep.

Sorry - I was at a meeting yesterday and house-hunting in G'boro...

Buy or build an ERW cage for SCCA at your own risk. GCR is very specific about DOM being required and, if there have been any FasTrack items that changed that, I haven't seen them. I don't know about NASA.

Door bars are indeed required in IT but not necessarily "NASCAR-style". The ITCS refers to the requirements for Showroom Stock category cars which, in turn, says "a side tube connecting the front and rear hoops across the driver's door opening is mandatory" (GCR 18.2.&). Passenger side door bars are allowed but not required.

Sorry, I really can't "show" you, but both Nash and myself talked to the SCCA Club Racing Tech division about this, and there were no if's, and's, or but's about it from his standpoint. The SCCA has banned ERW material for new race cars as of 1-1-03.
