Default Rust, what work, what doesn't?

Hey everybody,

Well my 02 SI is starting to get a little bubble of rust over the rear wheel wheel and was wondering what, if anything, has been done and tried that works. I've heard so much good and bad about POR15, rust bullet, etc etc that I am looking for firsthand info on what you might have tried and your results. I am sure that this has probably been covered many different times in the past but maybe somebody has some new info on a product or something.

Anyway, if anybody can help that would be awesome.

Thanks!

Surface rust-sandblast out and fill. Rust all the way through- cut out and replace with metal.

What bad have you heard about POR-15? lol.

The only issue about POR-15 is that the solution does not protect itself against UV rays, which therefore requires its other solution in combination with POR-15 that protects it against UV rays.

This.

However, if you're in Canada its not enough.

Surface rust
- Sandblast out/or sand out with 300 grit the loose rust/debris
- Apply POR-15
- Apply filler
- Prime
- PAint

Rust Holes (All sizes)
- cut/grind out
- weld in new metal
- Apply POR-15
- Prime
- Paint

I've never use POR-15 in my shop. I was under the impression it was some type of undercoating to prevent rust? And Honda wrc, any time you are repairing rust and with a filler make sure it is a waterproof filler. Such as duraglass or all metal. These create stronger repairs that will not soak up water like regular plastic filler.

Ahh, sounds good and something I wouldn't have thought of ABBJ! As for the POR15, I have heard people comment on how it "just falls off" more than once, but I am supsect that it was probably poor prep work that led to the poor adhesion.

Do you guys think one of those abrasive sponge type wheels would be good? You know the ones that look like this http://cdn.instructables.com/FQ1/WTE...YXJ.MEDIUM.jpg

That's the effect of UV ray's drying out the POR-15 leading to crumbling and breaking off.

Get a 2-2 1/2 inch wheel. There not sponge...there usually strands of steel/copper/wire on a wheel.

That plus an orbital sander and you'll be good.

Sounds good...I am gonna order up some POR-15. It seems the negatives I hear about it are always2nd or 3rd hand anyway!

after cutting out and welding, what is does honda used to spray under the car? it's like a hard yello sponge like thing. then they coat with rubber.

EDIT

that yellow stuff is way better than rubberized spray. thats is what i am looking for. i have a hole near my foot rest and i am trying to patch that hole up with just sodering or some cold weld. then spray that yellow stuff.
