Question: DIY or just go to Maaco? Post your paintjob pics...
My 91 integra is in desperate need of a paint job. For a second i was thinking about putting it in my garage and slowly wet sanding and bondoing over the course of a few days and do my own ghetto primer, then pay to get it sprayed.
But im looking on craigslist and the local Maaco is running a 249.99 special with 2 hours free body work, im tempted to go with them becuase i would be spending at least 100 bucks on materials for the DIY and from their pics it looks like they do good work..
im not looking for a show qualty paint job but i do want something that at least looks glossy and OEM. I had a 99.99 earl sheib on an old 240sx that looked like crap.
also, my car is already black and i am just respraying black so i dont need door jams, etc painted. i do have a few places on the door that need to have bondo work done.
im not a total newb i am pretty experianced with spray paint and i have never used bondo but i do alot of home repairs using spackle and i cant imagine it being that much different...
ALSO IF ANYONE CURRENTLY HAS A FRANCHISE (maaco, earl sheib) PAINT JOB PLEASE POST PICS AND HOW MUCH IT COSTED, THANKS.

if you dont mind shanding and have the time to sand your heart out for days... do the rustoluem paintjob trick. Long as you dont go easy on the sanding, it turns out better, and last longer than a macco paintjob will. You just gotta sand like a mo fo!
Just remember you get what you pay for. You cant spray thinner based automotive base coat over rattle can primer without some kinda of adverse reaction. So If you plan on doing the body work yourself at least spray some good primer over top before you take it to get sprayed. But based on your post I think your in for a rude awakening
i have a pretty good idea what the cheapo paint jobs look like because i got one from earl sheib before, it was nice and even but was not glossy at all and they didnt paint doorjams.
from the pics this particular Maaco posted, this is their regular 499.99 service and it looks very close to OEM paint.
if i did DIY the primer i would be using would be Rustoleum..

^cool good to know guess i wont be going that route?
im tempted to try the maaco thing out. makes no sense to spend 1000 on a paintjob for a car only worth 2x that much...

thats why i say try the rustoleum roll on paintjob. Its anywhere from 50- 100 bucks. depending on how resourceful you are. and if you take your time, and sand the **** out of it, it will be better than a $1,000 macco paint job. it will sure as hell last a lot longer too! and it holds a nice gloss for quite awhile from my experience with it. We did it just for fun to see what the hype was on my buddys old beater, and ill tell ya what, its still looking decent. My friend's experiences with macco have always sucked ***, so i wont ever even think about them.
But your probably looking at atleast 10 days of down time to do it propperly. So if you can do with out a car for that long, might want to look into it.

Just to let you know painting the car means nothing. The bodywork underneath means everything. You can have the best painter in the world and if the bodywork was done by a gypsy then it will look like SH*T when done. I have had so many ppl come to me over the yrs and ask me if I could spray there car when they got done with the bodywork. I say 1 word (NO) When your out at a show Nobody asks who did the bodywork. They ask who painted your car. I wont take a bad rap for someone else not knowing wtf there doing.
i would stay away from macco, my cousin went there and 2 of my buddies and paint started chiping/ cracking peeling off the car... i sanded down my car was getting ready to take it to macco but, i think id rather **** up painting it myself... then letting them touch it.. figure if i mess up i can sand and start over... unless i find someone decent to spray it for me lol...
DONT GO TO MAACO

I have a Iwata LPH-400 with a orange cap. Clear was sprayed with a LPH-400 with the stock cap. Sealer was sprayed with a Astro Evo-4014 (my favorite sealer gun)...
those are some expensive guns! for the price of the guns and paint, i might as well just take it down the street to the import tuner shop they do paintjobs for 1000.
I'm in the process of repainting my integra. I found a place that rents a paint booth. I know how to paint but have never painted a car before, I paint airplanes, so I practiced on my fenders. Came out good so next month is when I'll do the rest of the car. If you take pride in doing things yourself, then I say do it yourself. Lots of people on here have painted their cars in their garage and have turned out excellent. I went to Maaco a few years ago on my previous car. The paint didn't last too long. I also wouldn't recommend doing the $50 paint job. It is sooo tedious. When I did my jdm conversion, the front end was silver while the rest of my car was black. Figured I'd try the $50 paint job just to get it close to the rest of the car. I got great results, but the time and effort put into just doing the front end, I couldn't imagine doing the entire car. I'll post pics of my car next month once its painted and if you want, I'll also post pics of when I did the $50 paint job on my front end.
every maaco is owned/run privately, RESULTS VARY!
Maaco in Hillsborough, NJ did a GREAT job on my truck's paint, my body work I did myself was sub-par but they painted it very well. I just had to mask the entire truck myself so it didn't turn out like ****

get the maaco single stage, you wont regret it if you go to reputable shop, dont let these ***gots on here persuade you into painting your car with rustoleum, if you have any sort of respect for your vehicle you will go with automotive paint. Maaco's quality depends on the painter and the shop doing the work. So get some references before you go anywhere.
