Question about Primering Paint
Okay here is my question. Im using new paints now. Im using the stuff from Napa. Its a Martain Saint Paint, a branch of sherman williams. Im using a spray gun and air supply.
The paint is 200 bucks mixed, its not cheap and its a primer. Im about 2 coats on now and Im noticing tiny imperfections from the old paint where I missed a tid bit of old paint.
I grinded off all the old paint with one of those angle grinder pads that rip the paint off the surface, and I hand sanded the edges off with sand paper.
You cant barely notice the tiny imperfections from the old paint, what Im wondering is if the another layer or two of primer will smooth things out. Im about ready to go onto the top coat, but Im not going to if they need to be resanded out again. And at 200 dollars for a bucket of paint, Im not trying to end up needing any more than is needed.
I tried to take the pictures with my DLR D40 camera but it doesnt pick up the imperfections.
Will the rest of the coats on the paint even it out, or does it need to be evened out with sanding?

yeah you should be able to smooth things out with a primer , get a DuPont HIGH-Build primer or any type of HIGH-build , you should be able to black sand it down with some 180 then 220 , comes in green , yellow , white , and Grey . Price is idk...... ? but that i know will work for sure to fix your problem. hope i was of help
how imperfect are the imperfections???
i mean are these scratches? or like needs body work??
if you can still see scratches, you need to sand down with finer grit paper.. i went down to 220 before spraying on a High build primer and you cant see scratches...
just remember, paint will not HIDE the imperfections, it will MAGNIFY them...

Like paint that wasnt sanded off around the edges.
Ive layered on about 4 coats of primer and I can still notice it but thats cause Im looking for imperfections. So Im guess in that it needs to be sand off completely again.
The funny thing is that not even the camera can pick them up. But they are driving me nuts cause I know they are there.
So you guys are saying a high primer. Ill look into that.

yeah i would suggest doing it over again... cuz if you're troubled byit now, imagine how much more troubled you'll be after you get it painted...
if you can SEE the imperfection with your own eyes, then it needs to be fixed...
but good luck to you!! and yeah look into a better primer..

i really dont know what youre talking about... maybe a some pictures would help. but you say the camera wont pic them up... but from what i can understand about what you're saying, if there is any level difference from any coat, you're gonna need to sand. if u dont wanna resand everything over.. then just featheredge those lines
block the imperfections out, and reprimer. you said youve put 4 coats of primer on the car already but havent used a high build 2k primer, what type of primer are you using, lacquer primer ? And one more question, did you go all the way to the metal when stripping your car down ? If so, did you use an etch primer ?. I know that may be a little off topic,im just trying to save your butt from doing a ton of work and than it being ruined.

Yeah guys thanks for the suggestions. Im pretty sure its self-etching primer, I dont have the can anymore. But I am going back to napa in a few days for the paint itself.
I went to napa originally looking for an epoxy primer and they said they didnt carry it. They then offered there primer, and when i asked if it will be fine for bare metal surfaces they said yeah.
As for the imperfections, I dont have an issue with blocking them out, I was just wondering if there was any other suggestions as to make everything mesh together nicly.
I have about half a liter of primer left and I still have the door jams to do, and Im not trying to run back and spend another 60 bucks on a quart of primer.
Over night some of the paint did even out. There is a few spots that didnt are going to just be sanded down and re primered.
I hate to see wasted materials and efforts on stuff like this, but there is nothing you can do if you want it done right.
Anywho, thanks for the tips, they certianly opened new doors and made the learning experience here expand more.
Thanks again, this tread can be locked now, I have no further need.

Okay, well since no one locked this thread yet, Id like you guys thoughts and opnions on this. Ive been reading through the arcives for the past few days and thought Id add some of my own info in here.
I picked up a cheap HLVP spray gun and cheak compressor from Harbor freight the other day. And Im putting it to the test on this Dodge Neon SRT4.
Im practically done with the primering here, I have a 2 more door jams and a couple spots I missed before I move on to touch up, sanding and than onto the base coating, or stage 1 coat.
I have to say, that this is definatly diffrent than a spray can, and Ive been inhaling paint chemicals for the past two hours. Usally my buddie at the garage is here and I always ask his opnion on the work Im doing, cause I want an honest awnser. He usally goes over my work and then adds when I forget to do something. Pretty nice, but the son of a bitch went back to his country for the winter, now I b all alone at my gargae waiting for the paint to dry.
This gun is okay, the compressor sucks, cause I can do a panel and then the compressor drops down to less than 40psi and I have to wait for it to replennish its air and go again. Im about done a gallon of primer paint here and I have done some body work to the car, that needs to be gone over 1 more time before its complete.
The front bumper was smashed up, and the rear bumper had cracks in it. The front bumper was bondoed and then sanded and then cleaned and then used some filler to smooth it out. It needs a little more sanding in some areas because its a little uneven in some places.
Here are the pics of the work Ive been doing. Now Im looking for constructive critisim here. I havent done body work in a while, not since the black prelude, just some engine bays and couple sets of wheels.

Why did u ruin a decent stock paint job? Looks hideous now. Your bodywork is well below par. That primer is as dry as popcorn without butter
But ya that car needs help bad now. How about you let someone redo it that has more knowledge
