Hey all, I'm trying to get some info regarding what I should do about my little beater wagovan. The car is 20 years old and is need of fresh red paint. The problem is that, it has about 20 years of dings (stoner college kid had it for a few years, parents gave it to him). And a few specs of rust. when you look down the side of the car it looks wave'y as hell. Dings scattered all over the place. The roof also make loud "BOONNGG" noise when on the freeway with the window down...
I'm planning to either get it painted soon or paint it myself soon, still not sure. What I DO know is that I don't trust the "fast turn around" shops to take their time on the body work, so I want to do it myself.
What can i do about the dings?
What filler do i use?
What filler can i use that I do not have to go down to bare-metal?
How should i fix the "BONG" roof and the dent in it?
What do I do about these tiny specs of rust in the paint?
This will be a garage affair, so the simpler the better, LOL

yeah i read through it a few weeks ago, and i remember it mentioning some fillers requiring that the car be taken to bare metal...with all the dings and ripples in this thing the entire car will have to be taken down metal...lol
yeah if your going to do it right pull the low spots with a uni spot, Hammer and dolly down the high spots and spread the whole panels with mud and block it straight. If you have rust cut it out and weld in new metal otherwise it will come back a few months after you paint it.

thanks for the help man, in your post you mentioned "mud", when i walk into the paint ad body supply store what will they hand me when I ask for mud? I've seen Chip Foose's guys on that show "Over Hauling" spread a putty over the entire panel like you mentioned, however they always make it a point to mention that it is not "Bondo"...what is that?

Sorry mud is just what i was taught it was called. Bondo is a brand of body filler, its old school and everyone calls all body fillers bondo. People have a lot of different names for body fillers, "mud" "plastic" "bondo" ect. Its just really shitty that's why everyone says not to use it. I use z-grip for my major spreads, or i should say for right over the bare metal for the whole panel. here is a link to it :http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/pc-1...FRwpawodQ0eY3A
then cut cut that down with 40 grit on a block and get it all straight. (A little trick i learned is you can start sanding it before it fully sets up to save alot of time) Just starting out you will probally need to sand and re spread the panel till you get it just right. Body work is an art not everyone can do it well and fast. After i get my z grip where i want it then i spread the whole panel again in 416 spot glaze to fill in all the 40 grit scratches. When you make this spread don't get crazy with it or you will end up cutting into the z grip underneath and you will start all over again. You really want this spread to be neat and clean so it will sand easily. here is a link to 416

I like to cut down 416 in 120 or 150 with the body file again making sure to keep it all flat and straight. Some people don't do this step and they just prime over their 36 or 40 grit bodywork and then after the car sits in the sun the primer shrinks then you see all the sanding scratches. Make sure you let your materials dry fully you will regret it if you dont. Once you prime your bodywork and its dry normally after a few hours, pull the car out into the sun and let it bake if possible. You want any shrinking to happen before you paint so you can re-prime those areas and repeat as needed so your paint job doesn't turn out like ****. This might be a little bit too advanced for you but I'm super **** about my paint jobs but they turn out amazing. Just take your time and if you know anyone that does bodywork and painting ask them for help till you get the hang of it. here is a pic of a recent paint job i did, and by taking my time it came out flawless.
I just learned from trial and error and my dad but i guess read thru this

thanks for all the input guys, once i think i have done enough research I'll post up a thread on the process...
KEEP THE INPUT COMING THOUGH! Regarding fillers you used, maybe show some before and after pics of the sides of some of your cars...
Funny story...I saw a VW bus (HUGE panels) going down the raod today, thing had SUPER fresh, glossy paint, but it looked like a damn ocean as I pulled past it...I can't have that, LOL!

Just a piece of advice make sure your surface is clean and rust free before applying the filler. You can find cleaners to wipe the surface down with in auto stores and paint stores. I don't think I got all the rust off of my old truck and my bondo eventually separated from the panel.
