Ok, I know some of you will flame me for this but thats just how its going to have to be.
I have a 90 crx hf. Its not worth a grand paint job because Im going to autoX it. So I dont need an amazing paint job. So I was thinking on rattle canning it. Now I know what your thinking and Im not looking for just a quick one day paint. I want to prime, paint, and clear coat it still. I know I will have to invest a couple houndred to do it right and im fine with that. But duplicolor seems a bit too spendy. Is there any other auto spray paints out there that you guys would recomend, or any that you know of that can stick to metal and flex like normal auto paint should. Thanks in advance.

Ive heard too many horror stories from them. I thought about them before. But I think if I put time and effort into it I can make my car look good. Like prep it nice, sand, paint, everything. This is just my project car and its hella sunfaded and looks like crap. I dont need a show stopper paint job. I already know about the $50 paint job. I have the sprayer that some people use but I had a hell of a lot of orange peal from it when I painted a fender using that method.
If you have access to a decent air compressor and HVLP gun you will probably get a better finish than with rattle cans. I have seen some nice DIY paint jobs on here that have been done that way in a garage.

I own a wagner HVLP spray gun. The electric one that you plug in. I just got some bad orange peal from painting it that way. And everytime Ive spray painted I havent gotten much at all. So I dont know how to get rid of orange peal with the hvlp. I use the consistancy funnel that the gun suplied but I still got orange peal.
if its the red crx that your talking about then it just needs a good compounding for like $60 bucks from a detail shop or body shop. better to save up if you want a real paint job or just use the cash that you would spend for something better towards the car

some parts of the paint are much worse than you see there. Some parts have no clear coat at all. Plus I need to get a new bumper and hood, so unless I can find some red ones then I will be getting some from certifit which come flat black, which would then need to be painted.
its not about the gun you use that you get orange peel. its about how you sand it, when, what grit and all that. search the 50$ paint job thread and find out the specific methods
becuase many using those guns have turned out great bc of sanding

Ive already read the $50 paint job and most people on there dont give specific steps to sanding. Its just Paint, sand, paint sand. That kinda thing.
And to the guy above me, im looking more for a more stock looking paint job. Im not to big into the primer look.

None the less, it was done entirely in rattle. You'll need to roll on the paint to accomplish the "$50 Paint Job".
Rustoleum paints are being used IIRC. Not sure about clear. I don't think so.

I tried the roll on thing as well. That is much harder and more tedious than you would think. The hvlp gun that I have from wagner does the same thing. Plus it gives you a consistancy funnel so you can mix the thinner and the paint right. I guess I just need to sane better.

Yeah, I want to prep it really good. I did a fender with my wagner hvlp spray and it turned out good before I sanded it with 1000 grit as my last coat. It went from nice and glossy to dull and satiny. So today I went out and got some rubbing compound and whiped the fender down and it turned out better than expected. It still has some deep scratches from the when I sanded the original paint off. But other than that it just has a small amount of orange peal which I could sand down. I will post up some pics in a few hours of the fender to show you how it looks. Its no show paint job but for what I want it lookes pretty damn good.

Ok, the fender that I was talking about, how it had a lot of scratches and orange peal, well I got some rubbing compound and clean teary cloths and went to work. After just one spot it started coming out pretty nice. I put a little bit more elbow grease into it and This is how it turned out. I didnt prep it very good and I didnt go through the whole sanding process so there are still some deep scratches underthe paint on the metal. But now I know where my mistakes are and I should be able to fix them.
I also get a hold of a power sander that takes 6 inch sanding discs. I will be sanding my car down past the clear coat with 180 grit sand paper. I used it on my spare hood and to get past the clear coat only took about 1 minute.

its not bad. If you want it to be really nice and glossy, WET sand it with 2000...I hope that you are wet sanding the primer with 800 till its all nice and smooth. then spray your paint, try, wet sand if need be, then spray a few more coats. sanding with 2000 will be a bit pain staking but...it'll be much worth it in the end.

yeah I didnt use primer either
so thats another thing I need to do. On that fender I used 1000 grit and it left scratches thats why I was so disepointed in it and I just left it alone for a couple months until I just picked up some rubbing compound. The way it came out now I figure it will look a lot better if I take my time, use primer, and higher grit sand paper. I just rushed myself on this fender. I really wanted to see what it would look like. So I will be picking up some white primer and the paint will be sunrise red.
Where would I get 2000 grit. The most Ive seen is 1200 I think. Not sure where to get 2000. So any help would be great. Thanks for the input so far.

You need to go to an auto body supply store they will have 2000 grit sand paper and it will hold up much better to the wet sanding than the crap you will get at wal mart etc.
Sounds like you have the right idea you just need to take your time and not skip steps like primering or sanding all the way.
