Default '98 CR-V just "quit"... then back to normal

My wife was driving our 'V a couple of days ago and while going about 40 mph everything but the stereo suddenly shut down... engine, gauges, turn signals, etc. She turned the car off then back on and everything went back to normal, and ran fine.

Since it all imediately went back to normal it doesn't sound like an alternator or battery, and the ground is good (figured it was anyway since the radio stayed on).

So, what could have come loose that would affect all (or most; some things weren't on, like the headlights) of the electrical system except for the stereo?

Also, I'm curious if this is in any way related to a P0301 code (cyl #1 missfire) that I have been troubleshooting that seems to be electrical in nature as well (yes, the valves are fine). I'm wondering if there might be an intermittent open that could affect the ignition and have been causing these missfires as well as this sudden shut-down? Whatever this most recent episode was, however, it did not trigger a code.

There is a service bulletin for these CRVs for the ignition switch

service bulletin 02-031

BACKGROUND
Electrical contacts in the ignition switch can wear
prematurely due to high electrical current passing
through the switch. Worn out ignition contacts could
cause the engine to stall without warning. Although the
engine will restart in most cases, a vehicle that stalls
while driving increases the risk of a crash.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
1997 Accord (L4)
1998 99 Accord (L4 and V6)
1998-00 Civic
1997-99 CR-V
1997-00 Odyssey
1997-99 Prelude

Do you know if this bulletin has been performed on your CRV?

You might have nailed it. Apparently it hasn't been changed (we've only had the car for a couple of months). I called the dealer and I'll be getting a new switch Monday. Hope this is it...

well unless you work for a Honda service dept, you can't get access to these bulletins. You will need to call your dealership and give them you VIN to see if this has been done on you vehicle.
