Never heard of D2C. Where have you seen this?

D2 refers to the type of bulb base. These are the most commonly-used HID bulbs, which accept the commonly red-colored D2 plug. D2S is made for projectors, and then D2R is mostly the same, but has an extra black stripe around the bulb, to reduce glare when used in HID reflector applications. They're still not good to use in halogen reflector housings.

Then there is D1S and D1R, again for projector and reflector, but with a D1 base. The D1 base has the igniter built into the bulb base, instead of a separate igniter or ballast/igniter combo. These are much less common, only used on a few cars, and as a result are much more expensive and difficult to find.

I think D1 bulbs go in D1-specific projectors, but I'm not sure on that.

I think D2C is a gimmick, because a web search revealed sites saying they work in both D2S and D2R applications.

In addition to the D2S/D2R and D1S/D1R, I also found a D4S, which is a headlight used only by Toyota at the moment in the Prius, and a few other cars. I don't know any details on that bulb, didn't see a pic of it.

D2R = D2 bulb for Reflectors (like the IS300's or the Prius, notice the ceramic painted part of the bulb for light control)

D2S = D2 bulb for Shielded housings aka projectors (notice no paint)

D2C = D2 aftermarket bulb, C generally standing for colored (6000K and up) but it also means the base has notches to fit in both R or S housings.

D3 and D4 bulbs are Non mercury versions of D1's and D2's, it's said they'll need new ballasts to be used but people on hidplanet have said and shown pics of their D4's lit up on their Hella Gen 3 ballasts.

Prius's use the D4R bulbs. At the moment only Toyota and Lexus cars are using D4 bulbs.
