start with the basics.......intake, header, exhaust, kpro...then you can progress into other motor components like stroker kit or cams, port and polish or you may find out that what you want to do is swap and start out with a better platform

do NOT waste your money putting money into an a3 all motor. its not worth it in the end imo. swap in an a2 or k20a motor first so you'll have a better foundation to build on.

We did some work on an employee's EP3 just a few months ago and we were very impressed with what this little motor can do.

Cost of this build would be less for some of you that may have already started modding your vehicles not to mention easier to swallow when done over a period of time.

The vehicle baselined in at 141hp w/ nothing but a Short Ram Intake and Skunk2 Mega Power Exhaust (60mm). The exhaust was good for 6hp in a previous test.

We installed our Mega Power Header (in production as we speak), Skunk2 Intake Manifold, 70mm Throttle Body, Stage 2 Camshafts, Exhaust Cam Gear (set to -2), Valve Springs, Retainers, Valve Spring Bases, and Type S Oil Pump to make sure the motor was properly lubed above 6800 rpm.

The EP already had KPRO so we got to tuning it with the 87 octane gas that was still in the tank and ended up with an incrediable 192hp.

Some of you that want to hate on the K20A3 motors may find this next graph interesting... Our K20A3 vs. a K20Z3

like you said this is your opinion....is the a3 motor really that bad, no...its a great starting block for mods, you may not see the greatest results or what you want to see but the motor itself is great

thanks for the info guys.. i read some sections in the ep3 squad & they said start with the suspension first since cars do need traction to put down power to the ground.. which is true..

The prototype was just sent to manufacturing... we are waiting on the first article to come back, if all goes well with the first article test-fit we should see the product by the end of 2009.

I don't know what your budget is but the first thing I'd do if I had a EP3 was boost it. Obviously I would have good supporting mods like nice suspension and brakes. Those motors are perfect for a turbo IMO. Good luck.

i would do pistons, k20a2 oil pump, k20a2 head, a nice header and k-pro, that should net you 220+whp

and skunk2 im sure thats nice comparing a cam'd tuned motor to a completely stock motor when both have the same stroke/bore

This graph is with the Skunk2 header and K-Pro alone on the K20A3. As you can see in the graph the stock K20Z3 has nothing for the mildly tuned K20A3 until about 7500 rpm but by then it would be too late from a slow roll or a dig.

I'm very curious about above set up + some more for a3 motor; i/h/e, Kpro, cams, valve covers/springs, type-s oil pumps, intake manifolds, throttle body, etc.

what kind of hp gain is reasonably expected from above parts plus good tuning? reason for my question is because I wanna stick with my a3 and have it as DD.

Hence, Is spending around $4K on n/a set up gain comparable hp vs. JRSC race kit w/Kpro at $3.5K?

posts on HT forums seem to have agreement on n/a's reliability, but many SC owners seem to not mind their DD w/ feeding more than 6 to 8 psi...

any experienced insight would be greatly appreciated.

you wont see the same gain with an NA build....with the jrsc build you will yield around 250whp with rh/e/i/kpro and tuning...they are both reliable setups, some would say that FI is actually more reliable than doing an NA build.

its all realitive to what you want thou, you could think about a frank swap(k20/k24) and then do an NA build!! or you could buy a a2 motor for 2500 and then mod that...its all about what you want and what you think you will be happy with

thanks for your input, actually been researching for best options and it seems to pointing toward a motor swap. surprisingly the price of complete a2 is reasonable considering i could probably quick sell my a3 at lower than avg price. in the end, i could always go for turbo/super charger set up.

swap is the way to go imo, you will have a better starting block to build on if you do a swap and they are relatively inexpensive for an a2....you could probably get around 1k for your a3

good gains for that motor. i guess my point was that by the time you spend all the money on getting a k swap in your car...you might as well give yourself a better starting point. that's all. but i stand corrected by skunk2...nice graph. there was a couple on k20a.org that also made 19x on a similar setup.

you'll a fool. there a kid on k20a.org that did a a2 rocker swap on his ep3 and picked up like 30 h/p using stock a2 cams.... even with an a3 block its still a k series 2 piece block design you cant go wrong.... i would also look into swaping the piston. look for the 09 jdm ctr piston. 11 to 1 c/r... the only real different in the a3 and a2 block are oil squirter, and piston. oh yea a thiner ligher rods

LOL, I just mocked up my K20A cams in the A3 motor on christmas to see if this would work. Thats funny.

...just if the dyno with the A3 didn't go as planned (jokes jokes!)

lol that's funny!!

Glad to see the progress is going well.

Got my motor back together, and it seems to be real strong. Haven't got it on the dyno yet though..
