Default Does it need to be 02-04 k24?

Hi guys,

I've been researching and all the post I've read are saying to use 02-04 k24 but then all those post are back in the 2010 era. Is this information still usable? The plan is to do a k24 with dc5 base model gearbox (might change depending) swap into a dc4. I've done the research and gotten part list, just wanted to know does it need to be a 02-04 k24. If I can use a newer engine, what's needed to be done to be able to use them?

Thanks

No? Gets more complicated as you get newer and newer. Lots of CAN bus related things. And after you dip into the K24Z stuff the crank position sensor changes and only works with Z generation PCMs.

I have a 2012 K24Z7 in a CR-Z that is fully functional on a stock PCM. The last of the K24s!

As well as a 2004 K24A2 in an Insight on a 2007 PCM for the same engine just later model.

The answer to your question depends on the engine management you plan to run. If you are going to run a Hondata modified ECU, you are limited to an 02-04 wire harness and ECU. RSX type S manual transmission wire harness is the easiest to use, base manual transmission can be used, and automatic transmission may be able to be modified (so I have read, with modifications). The year of the engine is not as important. As an example, the Acura TSX K24A2 is very popular. You can use an 04 to 08 engine with the 02 to 04 RSX wire harness. The 09 and newer engines have a different crank trigger that is not compatible with the 02-04 wire harnesses and ECU's. You can now buy a front timing chain cover for the 09+ engines from Kpower Industries that uses the 04-08 crank trigger and can be run with the 02-04 wire harness and ECU.

If you are running a stand alone ECU, you can run any engine you want, but will have a harder time integrating with gauges or other systems in the car.

If you are running Ktuner, you need to run the wire harness and ECU that matches the application and may have a harder time integrating it with other systems.

If I had choice between K24a2 engines I would be after the 06-08 K24a2 for the following reasons :

Increased intake flow
  • Intake valve + 1 mm oversize
  • Intake cam High lift lobe with 0.9 mm more lift and 12 degrees moreBlock improvements:
  • Additional air passages in crankcase for reduced pumping losses
  • New crankshaft with more counterbalance weight
  • Revised pistons with more valve-piston clearance

The 06-08 K24a2 has PRB (05-06 K20Z1) intake valve springs pn# 14761-PRB-A02 and PRB (05-06 K20Z1) exhaust valve springs pn# `4761-PRB-A02.

The 06-08 K24a2 has a different throttle body pn#16400-RBB-A01 which is larger than the 04-05 K24a2 pn# 16400-RBB-J02.

The part numbers on the oil pumps are the same on the K24a2.

I got some of that information from Hondata's website. When I fact checked myself on the 04-05 & 06-08 K24a2 crankshafts they are the same part numbers. That does not mean there is not an improvement into the 06-08 part and is now the crankshaft that is used. You would need to verify this from a parts dealer.
