Speedometer issue
I've got a 1999 Civic 4-door DX automatic transmission. Going on 300,000 miles. I'm retired partially disabled and have plenty of time to get this working right, but always falling short of funds
I was driving down the road, cruise control on then all of a sudden I started decelerating. No speedometer no cruise, no odometer. The tachometer was working, but, no speedometer & odometer. I changed the variable speed sensor and the connector. Still, nothing worked. Checked in on other fixes, and replaced the instrument cluster, but still nothing working. The fuel gauge quit working years ago and has been going by mileage for fill-ups. Replaced the in-the-tank fuel pump/gauge but still, the gauge didn't work, as I said I've been going by mileage, and now without the odometer working, I don't like carrying a gallon gas can around.

I've tried everything you guys have suggested. Different cluster, resoldered contacts, checked wiring continuity/resistence, Used electronic cleaner, applied lite dielectric grease on contacts, Is it possible that transmission ate the speedometer gear???. I'm going to purchase another VSS. I'm lost. Going to try a "Heads up Display" that connects to OBD2.+ GPS.
Since doing all of the above stuff, the car is noticeably downshifting now. The speedometer and odometer still don't work. Going to put in another VSS tomorrow. Looking to see if the speedometer gear is in transmission, either moving freely, not turning or if the tranny ate it. I have no idea how the gear is held in the transmission, key/keyway or just held in by tightening a nut. HELP
The speedometer ring gear is PRESSED onto the differential inside the transmission... it isn't held on by a bolt or clip. I have never seen one come off.
I found that the Honda test harness 07LAJ-PT3020A is a very helpful tool. The speedometer is repaired do that tool and following the above repair web page.
