Need mechanical advice
I drive a 97 civic hx with a swapped d15b and last week i had it towed to a shop because it was dying on idle, didnt want to turn back over. the shop called me and said that the bearings are spun and that the best thing to do is replace the engine but their quote came out to $2700 and I just got this engine last year so i dont really want to pay that much for a new engine, would it be worth it to try and replace the bearings? or would it depend on the condition of the crankshaft? any advice would be much appriciated.
well it almost ran out of oil, i pulled over when i first suspected it was low and i put in 3 quarts and then waited till the next day to check it and it was still low so i put in 2 more quarts. it was running alright then i could kinda hear it knock when the vtec kicked in, it was like that for a few days, then i was driving around with a buddy of mine and i put it in third and kept it @3500 rpm for about 10 seconds so he could hear the knock and im sure that made it worse because shortly after that it started dying on idle, i could get it turned over again but i had to flood the gas and it didnt really sound too good so i pulled over and let the car sit, it was getting a little hot i had noticed when it was dying and i was restarting it, so i sat for probably an hour then i tried to turn it over and it sounds like a scraping sound after the starter ill post a video of it tomorrow after i charge the battery up a bit
Then take the engine out and disassemble it.
You may be able to leave the head on and just pull the oil pan.
Inspect the crankshaft to determine if it is in spec.
If not have it machined or replaced.
Buy new rod and main bearings and a gasket set.
Inspect for related damage needing repair.
Put it back together.
Then you MAY have fixed it.
Cost for a gasket set, rod and main bearings: $110 on eBay, under $200 from the stealer. Honda does make great gaskets.
IMO if you need crank work, a camshaft, cam bearings, a new oil pump and related items, you will have spent more than the JDM motor would have cost.
