Greetings from NorCal!
I am an experienced builder/fabricator. My current build is stuffing a Honda J32A2 with 6-speed manual transmission into a 1962 Austin Mini Cooper. The Mini's stock curb weight was 1,344 pounds. It used a cast iron 54 hp four cylinder engine mounted up front. My final target weight is 1,700 pounds. I am going to put the Honda engine/tranny in the rear to avoid the massive torque steer I would get if it was up front. The rear sub-frame is done and is all set up for the J32 engine/tranny. I plan on using the AEM standalone ECM. Radiator and plumbing not a problem. Fuel cell, pump and filters not a problem. I do have a number of questions that I hope this forum will help in answering.
I understand buying a J32A2 already set up for a manual shifter is nearly impossible. What modifications do I have to make to the engine other than flywheel/clutch to change it over to manual for my application? Remember, it's not going back into a Honda/Acura.
Whose clutch would you recommend? The car will be a weekend warrior at the Northern California road racing tracks.
I have purchase a 2003 Acura CL 6 speed manual transmission with 108K miles on it. Is it worth popping open to rebuild?
Are there any components in this transmission I should worry about?
I have purchased a 6-speed shifter with cables out of a 2003 Acura CL. The cables will likely be too short. Do any of you know a decent custom cable manufacturer?
Do any of you have tested AEM tunes for various hp/torques? Yes, it will be in California, but it will be in a pre-smog vehicle.
Those are a few off the top of my head. The car should be pretty peppy by the time I'm done.
Cheers!
