Hi my name is Reuben and my 98 Honda Civic sputters or idle wildly when I'm slowly accelerating. Anybody have any idea on what is wrong with my car? Thank you in advance.

 

idle wildly, do you mean surge? up and down erratic? check coolant lately? the sputtering could be a tune up thing or timing. possibly fuel delivery. need more specifics bro. lol.

 

At a stop sign, my rpm will be at 950rpm then it will go up to 1500rpm for about 2-3 seconds then back down to 950. Then when I accelerate, the car studders to accelerate. Once I am at speed of 35-40 it seems good. Only when I'm at idle or speeding up from a dead stop.

 

the surging idle sounds to me like a low coolant condition. check all your spark plug wires and make sure theye seated well. if you havent done a tune up lately, i would start there. plugs, wires, cap, button. the usual. lil carb and choke cleaner in the throttle body. are you getting any cel?

 

I will try getting a tune up. It had not had one in a while.
