Default What is the purpose of the knock sensor?

I had on obdI Ls/Vtec in my 98 civic LX and I swapped it out for an OBDI JDM B16A gen2.
The LS Vtec had no knock sensor but the B16A does, how can I tell if it's wired correctly (I have followed directions), and how can I tell if it's doing it's thing.

Also I'm experiencin a bit of surging after the car warms up (not major, only 200-300 RPM) and it idles at 1500 RPM, 600 too high for my liking.
Any ideas, could this be a wiring issue?
