vtec head on sohc
No, you don't need to change the pistons or rods. You will need to remove the oil control jet from the non-vtec block though. It's located between cylinders 2 and 3, on the rear side of the block. Other than that, the vtec head will bolt up. Just make sure that you install a new head gasket and timing belt at the least.
What year car is yours and what model?
No, this has nothing to do with the pistons and rods. If you have a 92-95 civic, I would suggest grabbing a D16Z6 head, intake manifold and header.
And all you need to do is swap the heads, and get an EX/Si harness to wire up VTEC.
If you have a 96-00 Civic, I would suggest getting the D16Y8 head, intake manifold and header as well, still the same with wiring up VTEC and using a VTEC ECU for both types.
a search for 'mini-me' on this swap would also help further your research.

i drive a 98 civic dx
i plan on doing a EX swap and put vtec head on it
so i have to find a SOHC vtec head right? not a DOHC vtec head
so everythign will bolt straight up its just the oil line, new head gasket, timing belt
sorr im a newb on sohc motor but i know dohc though

So you are going to be putting in an EX motor then? If so, you don't need to find a VTEC head because the EX motor is already equipped with VTEC. It is a D16Y8.
i thought it was a different type of VTEC. so people who do this mini-me swap have a DX motor and they find a SOHC VTEC head to make it VTEC?

???
Yes. If they throw a VTEC head from a D16Z6 or D16Y8 onto a non-vtec motor's block.
I extremely recommend you research on how VTEC works. That will give you more of a background.
