Icon5 Unable to Vanquish Evil CEL Light

Im hoping my h swap vets can help me here, I've been working on my h22a swap and I'm unable to figure out this idle surge and this code 9 cylinder position sensor light.

This motor has
Skunk2 Pro cams
OBD1 p28 ECU with a Hondata s300
OBD1 distributor
OBX ITB's.

CEL

I have jumped the distributor to the OBD2 stock harness and then jumped the harness to the OBD1 ECU.

I checked the continuity on the sensor leads in the distributor and was within range, I have also tried zeroing my exhaust cam to top dead center both with no luck in solving the code 9.
I have also tried the TDC/CKP sensor down by the oil pump in conjunction with my OBD1 Dizzy as opposed to the sensor in the dizzy.

The light is... intermittent, and specifically goes away and comes back on a stock tune.

My second question is would it be within reason to just put in a OBD1 wiring harness for the whole engine? Skip all of the jumper harness crap?

Throttle Surge

My second issue is when I press down the throttle I'm getting this surge that does not ever go past 2 to 3,000 RPM. I am tuned with TPS and have disabled IAC. Is this related to the CEL? or is my admittedly bad tune just... bad?

When I go back to a stock h22a tune It will rev up clean but does not idle and has a load index based on MAP which the car only takes from a small vacuum block.

Here is a video of startup and surging

Im hoping its just something silly or im worrying about nothing and just need to see a tuner.

OBX ITB's aren't a good choice in the first place... especially if you want a quality idle. A really good tune will likely still be a bit grumpy at idle occasionally. I wouldn't change the adapters/jumpers at this point since you have stated that the engine revs clean on a stock ECU... just get the darn thing tuned properly. As for the CYP code (9)... do you have a Genuine Honda Distributor or an aftermarket replacement one ? The latter commonly throw codes.

Believe me hindsight is always 20/20, these OBX ITBs have been a nightmare. The distributer is not a Genuine Honda Distributer, I'll look into getting one.

Thanks for the reply!

The only good thing about ITB's on a moderate street motor is the visual effect... they look cool at a car show. The truth is they will NOT make more power than a conventional intake manifold and single throttle body does... and in fact, will lose torque in the mid-range to boot. ITB's really only work well under two conditions: Full Throttle and Off.
