Shielded Wire Question
Is a shielded wire just two wires in one with one wire being the ground and the other going to the ECU? Cuz I know that the RED/BLU wire for the knock sensor is shielded, but I slit the wire at the passenger side shock tower and there is only one wire inside. I'm trying to wire my knock sensor so I need to know how this works. Basically I just need to extend a wire from the RED/BLU wire at the passenger side shock tower to the ECU. Thanks.

I know that your suspose to use shielded wire for the knock sensor. I wired mine up with regular wire and haven't had a problem. Same goes with my oxygen sensor and they work without a problem.

Did you wire up the knock sensor with a wire straight from the knock sensor to the ECU or did you go through the shock tower? I'm going through the shock tower and I noticed in the Helms manual that the wire from the knock sensor to the shock tower is shielded with the shielded part grounded to that YEL/BLK wire I think (I'm at work right now I can't remember the exact color). But as mentioned above, I cut a slit on the RED/BLU wire at the shock tower and it only has one wire inside. So I guess I'm just curious as to how a 18 gauge shielded wire looks like from the inside. Thanks.

a sheilded wire means that the wire is sheilded from emi (electromagnetic induction). Meaning that if you mess this sheilding up voltage could be induced into the wire sending false signals to the ecm.

So how would it look like if I were to cut a slit in a shielded wire? Would there be a conductor and an additional wire along side it? I guess my question is...what is the shield and what does it look like if you were to cut the wire open?

Not at all - the pic may look pic, but the O.D. of the insulation jacket isn't but 1/8" - maybe a hair bigger.
Its what you can use if you wanted to run a wire directly from the knock sensor, or even the O2 sensor.
The shielding is grounded - it is NOT a ground - and you only ground the shield by the ECU, don't ground it by the knock sensor.
