Sand Rail.
Ok has any one seed a honda moter in a sand rail. I am contemplating building one, I would like to use a honda moter. I have been talking to a few freinds and they say you need atleas 300 hp for a beginers sand rail. So with this I start thinking about a moter: 1. Supra moter( 700 hp on stock internals) 2. Sky Line moter 3. Turbo 2.0 ls or a lude moter. Any ideas?
i hear the toyota 1J twin turbo V8 with quad cams and good engineering can put out HEAPS of tourqe and power, like 1000hp if you put big T60's on it!!!
are there different classes - if not, go HARD from day one!!!

Supra motor( 700 hp on stock internals), Sky Line motor, Nsx v6, Tl and Rl v6 motor!
just put a b16 or an ls for now...that should scoot that rail around nicely. its not like they weigh anything.
Did anybody see the recent Motor Trend or one of those magazines that had the sand rails with turbo Caddy engines? That stuff was unbelievable. The next one the builder is making is for some guy with big money. It's gonna be a "reliable 1000 hp" from the turbo Northstar. Just crazy!

Hmm..... Interesting topic, have you guys ever been in a Sand rail or even seen one up close? You'll find that a majority of them have VW 1641CC or larger engines. If you have 300whp, that is MORE than enough for any beginner. I suggest you find a motor that is light but at the same time has a good power curve. A b20Vtec would be absolutly astounding - the highrpm power and torque combined with the heart wrenching sound of VTEC, DAMN! I had a sandrail back in the day with a 1641cc VW STOCK motor which probably had about 40hp or so. This thing was fun as hell. I won't claim it to be fast but it could probably outrun your stock integra LS. These Sandrails only weigh a few hundred pounds. If you put a big heavy V8 (seen it before) in these things, they're obiously heavy, harder to swap motors, not as easy to drive etc. If you start getting serious and want to attempt some serious hill climbs, sand wash runs, river crossings, the LAST thing you're gona want is a rail that's heavy in the ***. My recommendation is to use a honda motor with a standalone and possibly an LS tranny but that's up to you. Usually with rails you put some large tires on the rear and some sand cutters in the front, therefor the high ratio of a b16 could be made up in the tires. Remember there is no such thing as traction when you leave asphalt -- i.e. dirt or SAND.
-BTW - buy a rolling chasis, it'll be much easier!

A lot of the Tech's at my old work (Mercedes Benz dealership) Had sand rails, most of them had Subaru moters. One of them had Bensons sleve the block and was pushing about 450 he said. I think I am gona go gheto and get a B16 with some cams, a vw bus tranny and run it on a honda computer.
They make a bell housing adaptor, Area 51 used to have pics of a b16 in a sandrail using a bus tranny. The moter is situated so the balancer is at the very back of the rail.
hey i found this lind for some honda moters in a sand rail

Man I'm running it through my head how to build one of those, doesn't seem that bad, my dad could weld up that frame no problem. If I had a spare CRX I think I'd go for it, I have an a6 I could use but no trans.
the bad thing about putting a water pumper in a rail is the weight issue. I love my 2.0l porsche rail, It's mid engine so it's a good climber and I think the weight distrubition is great, All the water pumpers that I have seen are good for doing wheelies but the are fast. 300 hp in a rail that weighs 900 lbs is insane. I don't know who told you that 300hp was good for a beginners rail but they were pulling your leg. Most hot rails that are used all the time make about 150hp. I'm pushing close to 200 and there is NO WAY I would let a beginner that has never driven a rail drive mine. It's very easy to get alot of speed really fast and to get into trouble really quick. I'll you have anymore questions, IM me and I'll point you in the right direction.
I have 3.5 liter MDX (same as the Odyssey) short block for sale-I might also be getting some TL Type-S heads if you are interested in going that way.
