Default Newbie help: D16/B16 physical differences

Slightly out of the regular topics, but still Hybrid related:
I'm planning a Honda drivetrain install in a Mini (The Austin-Rover one, not the new model), and have faced the following dilema:
Some people say D16 (SOHC) is easier to install, being significantly narrower than the B16. Others say there's no difference. Then again, there are those saying I can only use a cable-operated clutch due to later hydraulic transmission being of bigger external dimensions (they claim this is valid for both B16 and D16).
For those of you familiar with both (actually, it makes 4 with different trannies) engine types: are there really any differences in external dimensions of gearboxes, except the clutch slave cylinder "popping out" the front of the clutch housing?...
Yet another question: If I cut the inlet manifold pipes shorter than they are, and mount the manifold itself closer to the block at a different angle than standard - should I expect any performance losses (if at all)?...

Thanks in advance for the input.
