which motor is best to modify while being on a budget?
ive been debating on either getting a b18c, b16a, or a b18c5.
i got 6 grand to spend, i want all motor. and i got a 94 si. my options are either:
1. get b18c5 and keep it stock
2. get b18c and do some motor work.
or 3. b16a and motor work.
what are your ideas. i want it.

how much money you got?
b18c5 great choice. 5-6k
b18c1 good choice also. 3-4k
b16a budget racer under 1k
I'd go with the b16a first, it'll get you all the little extra components you need to get the swap done with your car, then, when the time comes, you get the gsr, or type r or b20vtec, etc..
then it would just be a simple motor swap

I agree...go with the higher displacement first.
You will end up wanting it sooner or later.
Plus, I don't think the added expense of a b18c5 swap is worth it over a normal b18c....put the money you save into the b18c and it will be faster then a stock b18c5.

Well....I am going to be honest with you.
the word "modify" is too ambigious.
you see, because if you get a B16A motor, about $1300 less than a GSR, your going to spend $1300 to get it up to the stock GSR. Standard bolt ons alone are about $1000 for all the normal stuff.
Better to just buy the GSR.
Best motor for the money hands down on a budget is the Prelude motor. Put that prelude motor in there, don't modify it, don't touch it...just enjoy it...
And thats the best bang for the buck. period.
Whatever you do...don't fall into the trap of buying a B16A, then spending money buying all type-R parts for it...it adds up fast.
A budget to hit 14's is about $3000 or so for a cable B16A installed with new mount kit and an intake pipe, maybe a header. If you hit 14.5 with this, your doing EXTREMELY good, unlessy ou have a CRX...then maybe low 14's.
I would say a good budget for decent speed is about $5000. (high 13's)
Good budget for GOOD speed is about $7000 (13.0 area)
Good budget for very fast speed is $9000 (mid/low 12's)
and fully built 11 second all motor, or 10 second turbo is from 11k-15k.
Thats a rough estimate/ that is if you have nothing...justa single cam 92 hatch looking to swap.

Re: which motor is best to modify while being on a budget? (ImportReview)
1st gen B16A swap - $1,200
Cable to hydro adapter - $300
Straight swap, low 15's right there for $1,500
Then Crower 63403's, cam gears, springs, retainers - $1,350
Intake, Hytech/SMS header, exhaust - $1,600
VTEC controller - $250
Low 13's as far as the motor goes for $4,700, boom, done.
But after having owned an R, if I had the cash, it would be no question for me, get the C5 swap .......

250+ at the wheels, 150+ torque typically. In about a 2,000 lb car!!
Figure Lip in his highly modded GS-R with the R motor puts out 240/150, weighs 2,200 lbs, and ran a best of about 12.5-ish.
