Default Meaning of the different engine designators

I'm sure this is a common question, but I tried the search and couldn't find what I was loking for. I want to find out more about what each of the designators mean. I'm guessing the number is the displacement, but I have no idea what the prefix or suffix mean.
Just to provide some background, I drive a 92 vette and a95 Miata, and when I read posts about about people either beating or beaten by various honda hybrids, I have no idea what's what.
If anybody could help out or suggest an informative link, I'd appreciate it, Thanks

Hybrid generally refers to anything that was not original or OEM, ie LS/VTEC, or GSR(Integra) motor in a civic or Prelude motor(H22/23) in an Integra or Civic or H22/23 in an accord

D = Single cam civic (i.e. D16A#)
B = Dual cam integra/civic (i.e. B16A#)
H = Dual cam prelude engine (i.e. H22A#)
F = Single cam accord engine (i.e. F23A#)

The numbers after the engine code designate engine displacement in liters.

What about the part after the number? For example, what does the C1 stand for in B18C1? (I think I've seen this particular one before..)

Default Re: (fueledbymetal)

it mean different series motors...meaning that they all posses either the same or similiar block, same bore on the cylinders....

ie. almost all b-series (exeption is the CRV and prelude b20a/b/z) all others have 81mm bore

d-series also share the same bore and blocks (75mm)

mostly meaning that all or 90% of parts in between the series are interchangble.

also 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23 as in the d15b, b16a and other denotes displacement in liters 15=1.5l, 16=1.6

the next number after the b18, d15, b20 (usually means the type of head or simply the generation or version of the motor)

usually most start with A as first generation and then B and then C, at times Z denotes vtec as in d16z6, d15z.....

so b16a is a b-series (81mm bore, b-block), 1.6l, first of its series (sometimes in US, you can see these as b16a1, b16a2 (it just means a different generation or electronics used)
