Default ls/vtec

I'm very confused as to what I need to complete the LS/VTEC swap. Mainly I"m talking about the block I need to use(short or long). I've found a site with the necessary B16a head I need and they have a series of B18B1 engines for sale. Only problem is that I don't know if I need a short or longblock and what the difference is?

I know this is kindda off the topic, but here it goes anyways.
What is the right setting for timing on an LSvtec setup? right, now my car feels so slow to me. I have an Lsvetec by the way. I just put a CTR pistons, CTR cams, and ITR Dual valve springs. I'm thinking, my timing is off. I don't know if its retard or advanced. Need help and suggestions on how to tune it. Thanks.
