IRS for the Lude
I've had my car stripped for a couple weeks now but works got me so busy I haven't really done anything. A ring landing broke on one of my pistons. Luckily it didn't hurt the engine at all. I compared costs and as long as I can sell the old parts out of the prelude the cost will stay low. I decided though that I would do something crazy. Hopefully I have enough skill and money to finish
. I have a couple rear-ends for camaro's and mustang's sitting around 4 if anyone's counting, so I figured what the hell I miss RWD and decided to convert my 93 prelude into a RWD beast. Like I said I just got it stripped down not to long ago, still have to take off the gas tank hopefully I can do that tomorrow before I leave. That's another problem, right now works been sending me away from home the past couple weeks. The good news is though that my IRS I am going to be using for the rear suspension came in. That's right i'm using a IRS not a solid rear end I was just leading you on there haha.
I've been mostly drawing up ideas and instructions for myself to do this though and there's going to be a lot of cutting when I get back from work. I'll be able to retain the stock suspension mounting points luckily, but the Spindles will be switched sides so basically it becomes a forward steer car instead of rear. I'm hoping this will improve handling, because it will add some caster. The stock spindles the wheel bearing sits slightly forward of the imaginary line inbetween the ball joints. Where as in most cars its either dead center, or slightly behind as in the corvette. This is like the effect of shopping cart wheels, and basically makes the front wheels follow, instead of going against. There are negatives but the postives out weigh them, and will be better for the car than the previous way it was set. part of The firewall will have to be moved back 3-4 inches( this wont effect anything really in the inside) and the A/c will be relocated. This is so that the rack n pinoin will sit right without causing bumpsteer since the steering arms on the spindles are kinda high. Other than that the preexsisting tunnel will have to be made slightly larger, the gas tank relocated, and trunk space minimized hehe. Starting to seem complicated eh? It gets worse but i'll fill in that gap later.
So why go through the trouble? Why not buy a RWD car? Because preludes look awsome and I firmly believe I can do this, and I like to build stuff. I mean after all I used to build stuff out of legos all the time...
This means I'll have alot of Prelude parts for sale none of the interior though the Idea is to retain the stock interior and A/C. I will Post the parts up for sale, Next week when I get back. If you need something now though just email me ill be check my email.
Which motor will I be using? I'll tell you when I can afford it, hehe. You might be able to catch some pictures of a test engine in some of the pictures of stuff so it will probably be a engine close to that.
I know I know, I'm doing it wrong the H22a1 and the M2AF go in the trunk. I'd really prefer FR though, so the h22a1 and M2af are for sale.
Heres some pictures of the rear end for now when I get back next week i'll post some pictures of a prelude cut all up hehe.
Can you guess what this is out of ???

Awsome, finally! i cant tell what the subframe/suspension or diff is. vette? s13? So its gona be FR, are you just gona use a fuel cell? If possible stick with the H22!! Mad probs to you man.
Hey this sounds like a really good idea! I love the 4G lude body shape, exept I feel the front could use a little work. Why didn't I think of this...Oh wait, I did, started about a year ago. Long story, but I haven't been able to get done because I was working/evening school/self employed/parent in hospital/studying for MCAT then gone for summer, now digging myself out of a financial hole
anyway
We should talk. Where are you, I'm a little on the west side of Cleveland, or we can use the phone or e-mail or whatever. I've got detailed suspension measurements, drawings, solid modeled prototype subframes, suspension kinematic models, a rotisserie etc etc etc. In short, I've put rediculous ammounts of engineering and fabrication effort into this already, so I can throw stuff I may have thought of your way and vice versa. I'll post everthing when I finish up the basic mechanicals of what I'm doing probably by february.
Best of luck, I'm sure you'll beat me to completion, but later we can find a race!
P.S. Here's what it looks like with the fuel tank pulled, that welded in cross member will most likely need to go to fit your diff if you want to run reasonable half shaft angles. I'll shut up now, This is your thread, keep the good stuff coming.

I'll have to do that, But i'm leaving in about 8 hours, and I'll be back in a week so it will be about a week and a half before I update again. I will also message you in about that time hehe.
Why did I post this when im about to leave? cause i had time now and dont know when i would have time later ha.

tehehe nope guess again. Here's a Hint if the person doesnt mind me refering to them. The Phil is doing a engine swap to a car this rear-end came out of.

Well... welding and cutting all week long didn't go as planned. Friends from college came down and I hung out with them most the time. They're gone now and I have got the ball rolling, kinda. My parents bought some new shelfs for the garage so I spent alot of time ripping out old shelfs/ messing up the garage so the new ones can go in there spot. To hopefully bring a little organization, the garage now sits messier and more unorganized than it previously was. I found out I had to cut the back seats out basically as there will not really be room for them( Not like there was room back there anyways, maybe if you had your legs chopped off you might fit... sideways..) bolted the rear end up to some wood beams so it could hang in approximately the right spot. Found out it was slightly twisted the subframe that is either that or that hole that was to high is screwing it up kinda ghey not worried about it for now though ill fix it later. Yesterday, I got my grove on and got down with it and started making new frame rails. Sorry I don't have any pictures of my wooden frame rail I forgot to take a picture and its dismantled strung around the garage for various reasons. Today though I did finish welding my new frame rails together. There not welded in the car yet but thats coming. Tomorrow im definetly organizing the garage but they will be welded in sooner than later. I welded them together making two passes one, deep penertation! weld and one wide strength (terminology?)weld on the outside. Thus making them strong enough for me without reinforcement plates but there still gonna get cap plates. The only concern I have right now is welding them to the car and the strength there versus how they are now but im sure it will come to me( I plan to use plates)
Heres my suck *** welding skeelz ( hence why im worred about welding to the car ha...)

Anyone need a backseat? Its free with the trunk ^^^

So what engine are you going to use? I vote V8, preferably LSx, but they can be pricey. A really awesome engine would be a turbo v6 out of a GN!
More displacement FTW

I'm going to have to let you start building my project, or atleast send you alot of cookies. You nailed it on the head again! The engine of choice is a stock Ls1. Great power, good gas milage in a light weight car, and reliable.
