How do you know how many miles are on an engine w/ out odometer?

If you have the VIN number then you can use Carfax.com which will usually tell how many miles the car had (say the engine is from a wreaked car)..or it will tell you the last milage taken when the car was inspected for emissions.

Other then that..I dont think there is a way to tell how many miles are on an engine.
