I'm terrified!!!
My GSR swap is complete! It's all ready not throwing any codes no leaks. I'm terrified to start it! I changed the clutch flywheel and valvetrain, hand cranking the cold motor made 150psi on all cilinders but I'm afraid to start it, what if some thing brakes! There are a few people waiting for me to finish and I'm done. I have never done a swap before i guess i'm doubting my abbilities. What should i do to make it easyer for the engine on the first start????

turn the key to II (right before you start it) wait 5 seconds, turn it off
repeat that 3 or 4 times
it will build fuel pressure.
then just start it!

Re: I'm terrified!!! (leadfoot78)
Ok this is a problem, i decided i will crank the motor like you do for a compression test. I took out the ECU fuse took out the spark plugs and turned the key, nothing happened, just a quiet click. Sounds like the battery is dead but it runs the head lights and the stereo. If i'm not mestaken in a compression test the starter turns the engine so my problem should be the starter, battery or something in between. Help anybody????

If you are going to crank the engine for the first time, I recomend that you just Start it so you can get oil flow. I don't recomend just turning it over withought having it run because you won't get enough RPMs to get oil flowing, resulting in bearing damage.

thanx for all the posts it's nice to have people help out and not have to wait days like some other places. The motor cranked! I forgot to press the clutch pedal.

Re: I'm terrified!!! (Slopoke)
hehehe, yeah, check to make sure you still have everything in your shorts that you started with, double check, then start it up. Not starting it isn't going to solve any probs

Re: I'm terrified!!! (Hybrid93Hatch)
I think he meant depress? As in, he forgot to hold the clutch pedal to the floor...
So is everything alright with it now? I know I'll be scared too when I swap mine in and go to start it.

That's strange. I always thought the clutch had to down to the floor to start the engine on a manual tranny car

Re: I'm terrified!!! (Nameless)
I started my swap with no radiator, exhaust manifold, or mounts tightened all the way down...fire coming right out of the head. the way your set up sound, will be much safer than that so make sure the fuel line is tight and let er rip...

Re: I'm terrified!!! (bigblockEG)
Ok, i let her rip. There was no smoke coming from the exhayst and it started after 4 cranks. The bad thing is there is smoke coming from the area where the header meets the head. It looks like white gray smoke, might be from in between the header and head or the head and block but if it was between the head and block it would come out the intake side of the head too but it didn't. The compression is very good, new cams, new valve springs, new DC header and old header gasket. Help I'm scared to let her warm up when there is smoke coming off of it!

is this a jdm motor?
let it warm up and it will be fine. every swap i have done (particularly with jdm motors) has done the smoke for about 2 minutes then quits. Never once had a problem.
It's just the old old oil burning away and circulating the new oil with the moving parts inside now.
Just make sure it has all fluids and such.

Re: I'm terrified!!! (poison)
Its a JDM yes, i have been searching this topic for a while now and mostly people are saying that its the head gasket or head cracked. Mine must be the wierd one cuz the head gasket is a brand new genuine honda I'm 99% sure i put it on right(no oil or coolant coming from under head). I did everything by the book assembled the head with the manual in hand. The compression is 220/210/215/215 after running the motor for about 30 sec. Right now I'm thinking about the header gasket, it was rusted when i put it on or valve seals, i didn't replace those when i assembled the head. I'm hoping it will go away, I cant wait to head the motor start again! it sounds MAD with the open header.

Re: I'm terrified!!! (Charlie Moua)
You are prolly getting a lot of "cleaning" smoke. Casue you have had your hands all over the motor. when rebuilding and installing your hands are prolly covered in oil/grease.
That should be gone after the motor is run for a little wile and has got good and hot

Re: I'm terrified!!! (H22EK)
heh heh this thread brings me back to when I did my first big job on my GSr sedan, I changed the clutch and installed ITR cams and an ITR LSD, but when I had the car back together I was very hesitant about starting it up... knowing full-well that any problems would have been my fault. But eventually, (the next day) I got up enough nerve and the motor/tranny has run wonderfully ever since!
