Default gsr wiring problems help

Sup ive got a 98 civic with a 98 gsr engine that needs a new harness or stuff added to the old not sure which way the shop is going to go. But ive been told the gsr harness will work but then ive been hearing that i should use the 96-98 EX harness and 1 other person said i should use a dx harness what the hell should i use. And which wires would need to be extended and which wires would i need to add. The cars a civic hb cx

Whoa you have been told some false info...

You CAN NOT use the GSR harness. The reason for this is because in 96-98, Civics came with one engine harness that leads directly to the ECU. There is no seperate engine harness, clipping into the shock tower connectors (which is part of the main harness to the car) like in OBD1, and OBD2b (99-00) Civics.

What you will NEED to do, you have options for.

You CAN use the factory DX harness. You will just need to add several sensors, as well as change and extend sensors to reach the GSR's sensors.

You will need to add VTEC (three wires, two leading to the ECU, and one to the thermostat ground), Knock Sensor (one wire leading to the ECU), IAB (secondary butterflies -- which is two wires leading to the ECU), and you will also need to switch to the two pin connector IACV (Idle Air Control Valve).

The DX D16Y7 engine comes with a three wire IACV whereas the GSR uses a two wire. Using your DX harness, you simply cut off the wire, and splice the two wire IACV connector onto it, leaving the ORG wire cut (as this is not used).

HOWEVER, what you can do, is purchase a 96-98 Civic EX, and eliminate pretty much all wiring necessities which are VTEC, Knock Sensor, and the IACV fix, as the D16Y8 has all these already embedded in the engine harness.

The only thing you need to add is the IAB Secondary Butterflies and add that to the EX harness -- which is two wires.

The sensors you will need to EXTEND, is mainly the Purge solenoid, possibly the IACV, TPS, and the MAP sensor. It depends on how you mount the engine harness onto the engine. Mainly the reason for extending these wires is because the sensors are located in different spots of the GSR intake manifold compared to the other manifolds for the engine harness you use.

HTH.

nope, they both have the secondary O2 sensors being OBD2. You just put the O2 sensor on the GSR motor, and clip the secondary O2 sensor on the cat you have.
