general ls/vtec question
hey is it better to use aftermarket parts or honda type r parts for pistons, rods and cams? id rather do aftermarket, whats a good setup with pistons, rods, and cams that will give me good power all through the rev range. i want to make at least 220 whp with this setup including i/h/e, intake manifold, throttle body, and pulleys and anything else i need. im gettting sick of all the srt-4's around here thinking they own the streets. time for payback . o ya btw im runnen a gutted crx
and i also forgot to ask. i think a gsr transmission with lsd is the overall best i can get for this set up. i want sumthin with good acceleration and good topend. and i think this is good.. do you guys agree.??

Re: general ls/vtec question (who.needs.torque)
tranny a good choice run a reasonable amount of compression like maybe 11:1 or so but all the power is made in the head setups just my .02

If you want try to make the most power your going to want to run aftermarket parts. I'd agree with primeredbeast that most of the power to be made is in the head setup. Take a look in the all-motor forum to get some ideas.

Re: general ls/vtec question (SlowReaction)
it depends on what head you are using
Here is a comparison of the different compression ratios you can get using oem pistons with either a b16a head or b18c head. Type-r head will be the b16a #'s:
Note: This is for 89mm ls crank and std size pistons w/ oem headgasket
b16a:
pr3 - 11.3:1
p30 - 11.54:1
p72-00 - 10.55:1
p73-A0 - 10.8:1
p73-00 - 11.3:1
PCT - 12:1
a0 = usdm
00 = jdm
My recommendation: usdm type-r(p73-a0) or jdm type-r(p73-00) unless you think 11.3:1 is too high. I run the p73-00 pistons in my gsr w/ 2-layer hg and am at 11.5:1 and it runs fine.
My recommendation on topend: Talk to board member "Rocket". Rocket Motorsports imo are the bomb. You can get valvetrain + cams for right at 1000$ I believe. He will recommend the right products for your application. Here is a link to his profile:

Compression numbers are based on FF-squads compression calculator and c-speeds compression calculator. Links to both for reference:

Good luck and I hope this helps. If any info is wrong, someone for the love of God and Honda please correct me

Re: general ls/vtec question (who.needs.torque)
From my experience with Ls/vtec I would say that 220whp require a fully built head
valve spring/retainers,cams!,port and polish, new valves, as far as the bottom end goes on top of something like my bottom end will get you 200whp reliably
... it was hot tanked, decked,bored, honed IT'S running type r .25 over bore pistons with rings, stock Ls rods, new Honda bearings, new LS rod bolts, micropolished crank proper sealing of short block for LSV...i/h/e 175whp with a stock B16 head w/valve springs and retainers, ported stock manifold,stock airbox with K&N(loud when need be) 8500RPM REDLINES TWENTY TIMES A DAY, 8,000MILES AND COUNTING
THESE HONDA PARTS ARE RELIABLE FOR 200WHP GOALS.... PISTONS ,GASKETS,BEARINGS,BOLTS,gsR HEAD STUDS, OIL PUMP(VTEC),TIMING BELT(ls),WATER PUMP (ls)
Get a Head package or fully build one
FOR THE PRICE OF GETTING 220 i/e aftermarket pistons and rods, rod bolts,headers,intake mani etc.you mine as well turbo build the bottom end put NOS with a stock B16 head with titanium valve springs/retainers,Arp head studs and you will have a 350whp+capable longblock(with the aide of $600 Nos setup) for around the same price as this imagined 220whp engine..
