b18a block can be found for cheaper.. but b18b blocks are newer.. less mileage and if you don't plan to drop pistons in it at least the engine will be freshier

its all the same shitttz....18a 18b..its all the same. If you get an A..I'd break it down and built it back up. If I got a B.. I'd still do the same. it shouldnt really matter which one you get cuz you should break it down anyway. The b would have less wear and thats about it.

Ya Im planning on boring it out and installing Type R pistons and rings so ill go with A if its cheaper. Thanks guys. Any advice on things to watch out for when first starting the LS/VTEC project.

you'll need the .25 oversized pistons. And once its apart... get ARP rod bolts!
I know once this thing is put together... you'll want to "try it out". You need to remember that you'll need to break the engine in.

okay wait a second! A b18a is from the second gen integra i.e. it uses a cable tranny. The b18b is from a 3rd gen integra so its a hydro tranny. Since your name is 95redcivicex you need a b18b. The only vtec b18's are the c1(gsr) and the c5(type R).

B18A = 140HP
B18B = 142HP

Don't know why, but me thinks its the head design witch wouldn't matter in your case.

I've heard the intake ports are smaller for the b18as..cam design is the same I believe though...but if your not from cali don't worry about the year of the motor.. shoot if u have smog hook up don't even worry about the year period =P

B18A=140 hp
B18B=142
Primary increase was due to change in head design and B18B has a better I/M.

There is not much difference in the blocks. Some one mentioned age, which would be a factor, but if you are rebuilding, doesn't mattter much.

You should watch for wiring hassles mostly. The B18A has sensors in slightly different locations (like 2 or 3) So depending on your wiring harness, you might need to extend the leads for a couple of plugs. The other thing to watch for is if you will run the stock PCV system (emmisions) or will be using some type of catch can... but then your all motor, so you should need it. **The B18A has the 'little black box' on the back of the block and the 96+ B18Bs don't. Otherwise they should be pretty much identical. *Can't remember if the B18A has a crank angle sensor on not... but that would depend more on the wiring harness and ECU rather than the block...

The only real differences between these motors are in the top end. So for an LS-VTEC, it is just a matter of how new of a block you want.
