Default 90 Civic EX

Well, I was thinking about jumping in and getting my hands dirty finally. I've never really tinkered with engines and stuff but the D16A6 engine in my civic is about to see it's last days, besides my wife wants a new car, so I told her I'll try and fix the civic up for her, and she agreed . Ok....all my friends keep talking about is swapping out their engines for b16 this b16 that, but I was researching a bit, and the h22 and b18's seem to be better than the b16s. (bear with me, I'm learning) What engine types can I fit without heavy modifications into my car? I know some peeps who can help me out, but they will be my last resort. If anybody can give me any suggestions or point me in the right direction, please do.
Thanks
