Default S2000 noob

I'm in the US Air Force, currently stationed in Italy, but on my way to Okinawa in April 06, I've been looking at S2000's and I think it's what I want. I've always wanted a nice two seater convertible with some ***** (Miatas are too girly).

But anyways, if I do decide to get an S2000 I'd like to know the differences between the JDM S2000 and the USDM model. I know the first thing most of you will think is "you can't bring a JDM S2000 back to the US." Well, don't worry about it, I'm not coming back to the US, I enjoy living overseas, and will spend a very long time (20+ years) touring different countries. So by the time I'm ready to retire back in the US, the S2000 will be long gone.

So, I need to decide if I should buy one back in the US and have the military ship it over to me (free) or if I should buy a JDM model once I get to Okinawa? Are there any major differences in the two models? Anything that would make one worth having over the other?

Also, I haven't had a chance to sit in an S2000, I'm 6'2" 190lbs, I fit fine in a Miata (sat it one a few years back), so should I fit fine in one of these cars? I'm pretty easily pleased comfort-wise, as long as I can physically fit without taking Yoga classes first.

Any other info would be helpful too.

Thanks!
Jason

the s2k's in japan also have more compression.. i believe it's 11.7:1.. compared to the 11:1 over in the US....

there's also a "type V" that is availible in japan that has some type of assisted gear steering...

Figure out if you want RHD or LHD and figure out what the cost difference is with the exchange rates and all...

As was mentioned earlier the real difference between the current JDM S2000 and the current USDM S2000 is the fact that the US version runs the new F22C 2.2 liter block (because the japanese feel we're all fat and torque hungry in the US) and the JDM version still uses the higher-revving F20C block.

Personally, I prefer the F20C, so I would opt for the JDM version in your position. There is also the Type V variant offered in japan that has the variable rate steering stuff (I could take or leave that, but the steering wheel looks cooler ).

I know they made some changes to make the gearing less agressive in the 04+ US models, does anyone know if they kept the original transmission in the JDM version? That would be another selling point for the JDM one.

Another thing to think about is that if you're going to be overseas in Japan, you'll have more ready (and cheaper access) to high end JDM parts. Some of these parts are designed only for RHD S2000's so that's another selling point for the JDM s2k.

My general advice, get the JDM one

-J

F22C has 4% MORE agressive gearing for gears 1-4.
