Why does it matter? You're not going to cut it, or at least you shouldn't for any reason. It's a brace to hold the door panel out. thats all.
Why do you need to know other than curiosity?

Well first off you're making "modifications" to your vehicle, so yes, generally there will be cutting. In this instance, any speakers you put in are going to be much, much deeper than the stock ones...so you will either need to cut out the back plate of the plastic speaker mount, or you will need to remove the speaker mount entirely and replace it with an aftermarket one.
Why would you need to cut that piece, is what I keep asking you??? It's completely, 100% not even remotely in the way of what you are doing. That would be like me putting in an aftermarket exhaust...and cutting through my bumper to make sure it fits.

u have an option to take that off or leave it on.
whichever one u choose will not make a difference in a speaker install nor will it devalue the car.
it looks like its held on by 3 philips screws..so if anything, if you are that worried on what that thing will do if u take it off, just keep the 3 screws and the part and put it back on when u feel like its necessary.
i dont know what its purpose is, but its harmless if you take it off. it might be for some kinda road noise cancellation, anti speaker distortion ..who knows........................
all i know is that s2k's aren't the only cars that have that thing in the door panels

don't know if you're still wondering, but I've installed component speakers in a few s2ks and I've used that as the home for the crossover for the speakers....so, if you're going with components, there you go
