Which S2000 is best?
Hello, I'm in the market for a used S2000 and was wondering which year seemed to be the best. I don't know much about this Honda line but heard rumors that the newer ones have their powerband set higher in the RPM range. I love torque (low end power) that's one of the main reasons I'm selling my RX-8 b/c it lacks that torque I really desire (I've also have always been a Honda man at heart).....
Any advice would greatly be appreciated thanks.....
First suggestion is that if you love torque and your selling your RX8 because of a LACK of torque...you need to look at something besides the S2000, it doesnt have any torque either, in fact, if you had a high line RX8, i think it actually has LESS torque than the RX8 (not 100% sure on that)...
As far as which year is better...i said it once and i'll say it again...asking which year is better is like asking whats better, $1,000,000 in $100's or in $20's, its still $1,000,000, its all about preference on small details, both cars are EQUALLY great (in my opinion)...

Well, I'm sure the S2000 has a better torque "feel" at least than the RX-8. I would think it has a better power-to-weight ratio than my RX-8. I have the 6spd GT package, and don't get me wrong the RX-8 is a great car and once I'm out of the lower RPM range in it the car really moves! I guess I was just thinking of a nice convertable for a change and a sporty Honda S2000 in my opinion would the best choice.
I have since read a little about some S2000 years here on "hoda-tech" and a big thing owners where saying is to make sure and get at least a year '02' b/c of the glass rear window.
What I would like to know is how much better is the '04' model and above with the new 2.2 Liter and 8K rpm? What did the previous models have and how high did they rev?
thanks in advance!

9000rpm on the 2000-2003.
What I would like to know is which model is faster in straight line acceleration and which would be faster on a road coarse? Stock vs. stock.

between 00-03, the difference you will find on stright line or road course will be minimal. it's unproven, but there are several sources indicate 02 ecu runs a little more lean, hence a little more power, but will you really feel the difference? probably not. 00 has slightly beefier rear sway bars compared to the rest, so if your a better driver, you might be a tiny bit faster on the track.
The AP2 (2004-2005's) have been driven faster than the AP1 in both scenarios, but honestly, it comes down to driver with these things, they are really really REALLY close.
And the 2004+ 2.2litre ISNT better...its just different. They were looking to retain the fun high reving peeky engine but give it a more everyday user friendly appeal too (make it not so anemic in the lower powerband, but honestly, it still is)...
But really, you gotta get out of this "Which one is better?" mind set...their both awesome, of course the newer ones are going to cost you more, but as for which one physically is better, it all comes down to what your personal opinion is after you drive them...and that might be hard, as in my opinion, they both are equal and it came down to a cosmetic appeal to me because i like the new front bumper better (but as you can see on http://www.s2ki.com the AP2 bumper is easily interchangible on the AP1's)
DRIVE THEM BOTH...MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION.

I would think that depended on who was driving the car when the tests were made.

My friend ran his stock 04 13.8xx...most of the magazines are giving the AP2 13.9-14.0...so it really just depends on location, weather, driver, car condition, tires, etc etc etc (theres so many variables on these cars because their so close, comparing the two based on what you see in magazines and online is kinda moot)
Seriously, the ONLY way to know is to drive them both and make up your own decision...i could sit here and be biased and say "Get the AP2, its better, it feels stronger and has alot of updated parts over all..." But really i dont feel that way, they are both incredible, and i really have enjoyed ours, but i know just driving the ones my brother has had on his lot (AP1's) that they are just as fun and just have a different feel.

As a die-hard MY2000 Honda S2000 fanatic, I have to say in regards to power performance, the 2004-2005 are definitely better.
There's more torque and better gearing; giving even better driveability for that power bump from the 2.0L.
Also, as reported by ultimate lurker from S2Ki.com (aka Church Automotive), the 2.2L are quite under-rated from the factory. As they break-in, they get much stronger than the 2.0L after their break-in.

I dont care about the speed i do canyon runs and road race with my friend's. I have a 2001 S2k and to me its no difference. A s2k is a s2k as long as they all handle the same.

it still won't make power and a couple people that have done found it not so reliable

04-05 s2k is a great choice...dont let any the haters say the 00-03 is the best
PS...all the 00-03 s2k guys are buying 04-05 parts to make it look like the ap2...ahhahahahahahahaah
only downside is the wack *** 8k redline
