need help diff problem@!!
Here is my problem my diff has been making a sound that sounds like a constant high pitched whine when i go from about 20 miles an hour up to 70 i haven't taken it above that. Now some times when i put it in reverse it sounds like a clunk noise. I understand that the 00-03 do have diff problems and i've put it on a dyno and can determine that the noise is coming from the pumpkin area. I have searched the site trying to find the answer to the problem and the common problems are the differential, ring gear, bearings etc. I guess the ? I have is that on so many posts that seem to describe the same problem that I am having, but no 1 goes into any detail by saying what they have done to fix it.
I know there is the Spoon Rear Gearbox, but I cant seem to get a hold of one of those and i know the comptech diff reinforcement housing, the axel spacers..
If any 1 can help me solve my problem and get any kind of advise on what my options to fix this problem are would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

well your lucky since you know where the problem is coming from.
your best bet is to remove the diff ASAP.
inspect it to see if your right.
rebuild it with new ring and pinion before you damage the housing if it hasn't been already.

Drain the fluid, check for unusual amounts of metal flakes.
Check CV joints, wheel bearings, suspension bushing/tie rods, diff mounts.
If you can confirm that it's the diff, tear that thing apart.

Change your diff fluid first. I may just simply be that your diff oil is tired and starting to break down. The rear diff in my CRV use to while like college ***** taking it up the pooper. Change out the fluid, it'd be quiet like a college ***** passed out after taking two ruffies.
I've never had that problem in 80k miles of owning my MY2000 (I put on every mile). But then again, I'm changing my diff fluid every three to six months. I've never had any rear end issue (I drive my car hard, but don't launch it from a stand...I've haven't had issue with axles, wheel bearing, and thankfully the rear end.

he has changed the fluid countless times, doesnt help the problem.
pretty positive that it is the diff but what is causing the whine. But none of you that have posted have had a problem like this and your talking about taking it apart. OK then what am I to replace?

If it isn't the fluid, then the whine is probably coming from one of two places, wheel bearing or from the ring and pinion itself.
The wheel bearing whine should be pitched depending on speed. Gear whine will come from different load, speeds, and/or lateral acceleration.
If it's gear whine, take off the rear, take apart the diff housing. Check the carriers, check the wear pattern on the ring and pinion, check how loose the ring and pinion are in relation to how they meet, etc.

if u hear a clunk when u shiftinto reverse thats not the rear dif, unless u meant driving in reverse.
the whine could be different things, take it to a mechanic to diagnos if u dont understand noises. a metal whine means metal on metal rub, which means something is not aligned, possible damage to the dif's gears so when they spin and mesh together they rub.
lock your fingers intertwined, then do they same with your middlefingle wrapped around another finger, its harder to pull your fingers apart. similar idea.
u have to clean the dif then look closly at all the fingers on the gear looking for damage if u find nothing then dont waste the money on that part. go to autozone or napa and talk to them they can order this part, unless u like paying dealer prices.
