lost title ?
i bought a s from someone who had lost the title. i have bill of sales taken care of and 2 signed papers from her saying its my car, if i go to the dmv can i file lost title and just make it mine?
technically, the car is still hers regardless of what papers you have signed.....
she needs to file for a duplicate title.
when she does, it will take a couple weeks, to a month to get it depending on your dmv(you may be able to get an instant title)...... i have been down this road and it is a pain in the ***.......
does she have the license plates? if not and they are on the car she is still responsible for the vehicle, technically it is still in her name, until you have turned the signed title in with your name on it ,and she has turned the plates in......
good luck, this may take some time......

I hope you dont find out the car has a lien holder or something...a friend of mine in high school had a similar situation happen to him, turns out, the guy never actually owned the car, still owed like $4,000 on it through pontiac...and when he sold it to my friend, he told him "I will overnight the title to you...", friend didnt hear from him for about 2 weeks, called and phone was disconnected...and then when he tried to contact the DMV to see what he needed to do, they said "Bring the car back to the dealership he was financing it through...and work something out with them..."
He ended up losing $2,000 of his own money...and had to give the car back because he didnt have a way to come up with the $3,500 they were going to give it to him for.
Good luck man...

Yea that sounds like a bad deal already. Wonder why she wants to sell it so bad without a title. Maybe she still owes $12k on it? Or maybe she's ignorant to the fact that she can get a duplicate.
