Default Engine Torque Damper Installation

I purchased a used J's ETD and just had a few questions.

1. Should the shaft compress in & out? Might doesn't budge.. is it bad?

2. Does it matter which direction you install the etd?

yes it does matter which direction...the shiney silver part (not the orange) should be attached to the engine.

The ETD is not a shock, nor is it suppose to compress. It is suppose to be solid to dampen the movment of the engine.
