differential differences
so today i finally got my new differential in. the only problem is i think that the guy sent me thw wrong one. i ordered an ap2 rear end and putting my old ap1 and the new rearend side by side, i see no differences at all. the flange is even the same. is there any way to tell which one i have just by the appearance of it?

so the only way to tell that it is different is by opening it up? there isnt any distinct differences on the outside?

I don't know if it is the only way. I just came across that and thought it might be of help.
I can't find any pics of the exteriors of each MY....yet...(still looking)

i appreciate your help. i was just hoping that i wouldnt have to tear apart the differential to find out.
i have a bunch of numbers and stuff that i wrote down off the sides, does anyone know if there is a way to tell by the serial numbers or not?

it's simple: since ap2>ap1 all you have to do is look inside the diff:
ap1 differential is actually battery powered, run on 2 duracell D batteries..when we all know they should have used energizer
ap2 differential is powered by a nuclear reactor based on contained energy preserved from hiroshima and nagasaki
thus ap2>ap1 diff....it's that simple
these are honda motor co's deepest darkest secrets...jdm y0!

yeah i thought it was something with the batteries. i might trhow some recharable ones in or something or just wire the diff to the alternator.
on a serious note...does anyone really know the answer? i look at MY01 differentials (since i have snapped two) and they share the same number on it (41200PCZ0030) but the new one that i am hoping is an ap2 diff has the number 41200PCZA000. Does anyone have an ap2 diff laying out that they can compare these numbers to? thanks.

Okay i found the answer! I didnt realize when looking the first time that the threads on the flange are actually bigger. they are drilled in the same place, just thicker. So now i am changing the flange, throwing some lucas in it, and throwin it into the car. i want to thank SuzukaBlueAP2 for the help, its nice to have an online community that is helpful and goes out of their way to help others
