differences between AP2 vs AP2+
I'm looking into getting a vert.. (z4 boxster or s2k)
and am leaning toward the s2k the most(rarity, reliability, resale value)
and was wondering if anyone had experience with the newest batch..
basically i'm thinking should i buy an older AP2 and spend the difference on mods..
or buying a newer 06-08 AP2+ (yes i just invented that)
how is the new drive by wire system? the new seats?
I couldn't care less about the traction control...
are the new rims any wider?
is there any other differences vs the older ones?
most of the threads are about AP1 vs AP2 and they pre-date the 06 revisions..
so a search didn't help me much
my local dealer stopped selling S2k's back in 05 so i'll be importing one from the states most likely... so i can't just go test drive one. unfortunately...
i've only driven an AP1 for a week and i loved it...

unlike most people on this forum, i actually read the questions.
the 06+ which most of us on h-t call the ap2.5, is definetly the best, most refined s2000 to date, and a huge step up from the 04-05's imo. The new seats are completely the same as the old s2000 recaros, other than the fact that the headrests have been modified.
the new dbw system is aparently much more efficient, and is more responsive for daily driving. new rims are not any wider than the 05-06's IIRC. other than that, since you have been driving an AP1 for a week, other things you will notice:
a much smoother ride, less tendency to break loose. VSA, as well as a clock, oil life, and some other fancy things.
one thing you won't notice as much is vtec. it is much more noticeable in the ap1's, and not as much in the ap2's

Actually, the seats are not exactly like the 04-05. Yes, you got the headrest part right, but the material is completely different. A much more durable leather. They also include some sensors that work with the SRS.
As for the VTEC...I've owned both. Redline being the biggest factor...VTEC in both cars feels identical.

if you have a chance, drive an 04/05 and then hop in a drive by wire one. i personally felt, that even with a manual box there was a disconnect between my right foot and the engine that was noticeable enough that i didnt like it. i bought an 04 because i liked the older look of the seats and dont care about traction control either...ironically i put the car into a curb and bent a spindle.
thats my .02

Thanks for the replies.. for those that actually read my post...
seems like mixed feelings..
some are saying the S2k has taken a step backward..and others a step forward?
so it's becoming a more refined and "civilzed" car.. and less of a "hooligans" car... always on the edge...
so basically the s2k has Grown up from it's college teenage years.. and is an matured adult now
and some ppl see that as a disadvantage.. and others an adv.
strange bout the DBW worsening throttle response.. i thought the whole idea was that it makes it smoother faster and overall better?
many cars use it after all..
m3's throttle response is great..
350Z and RX8 aren't bad at all either..
so honda didn't "get it right" so to speak?

The throttle resposne is just fine. I have an 07 and I can't really tell the difference between that and my peppy B16 that I daily drive. A buddy of mine has an 02 and he couldn't tell a difference, neither could a fellow M3 driver. Hell, the M3 guy didn't even know it was DBW until I asked if he could tell a difference. (he drove back to back an 05 and 06 at an auto-x event, and did better with the 06).

i bet half of your posts are "look at my sig."

BMW M3 throttle response is slow, just blip the throttle without the sport mode on, and you will see what I am talking about.. As for the S2k, in my personal opinion I would go with the AP2 2004-05 without the DBW. Currently no real mods (not mod friendly or gains with the 06 up. My 2 cents...
Trust me, I traded in a 2007, for a 2005, and have never looked back.
07 feels great dont get me wrong. Some say its more refined I say its gotten a little sloppy.
Seats are nice in the 07 but not any nicer than the old seats. Also the upgraded trinkets and trankets dont offset the cost. I say go with the 05 if you dont like it update the year. Plus the cost of parts replacement when you decided to mod it are little harder to get your hands on.

thats exactly what i should have said. it was revv matching while bipping the engine that was the real disconnect for me.
i think honda has "gotten it right" for now as almost oall of their cars are DBW. its just a real personal preference. i might be overstating it and it could just be a mental thing as i like to know that my pedal is attached mechanically to the throttlebody. i dunno just me.
the 07 im my mind is a nice refinement and i agree with the "it grew up form its collegete years" i just parked my 04 next to an 02 and there were alot of noticeable differences. i can only imagine that the 07 is even a step up from my 04.

it appears you've had an AP1 and now an AP2.5
could you chime in on your personal experiences please?

sorry for the late reply. just been really busy and I was in jersey all weekend for the nhra sport compact event.
this is my comparison of the two cars...
the ap1 felt more raw hands down. really tail happy, rough, louder, etc. i drive to work in stop-n-go traffic and it was a task.
the ap2.5 is quieter, smoother, less tail happy, the interior feels slightly bigger, def feels slightly tq'ier too.
honestly stock for stock... the ap2 is just a more comfortable car. if you're planning to mod it heavily... just get an ap1 or 04-05 ap2. other wise... the newer the better
