Default AP1 or AP 2 Tranny

I have a s2000 tranny I bought for a kit car project. Seller was no help for ID. I would like to know how I can determine whether I have a AP1 or AP2. What can I look at to determine which model I have? Is there some visual clue? thx.

Check the VIN number on a Honda Parts site... it will tell you what you have.

Look at the green tag which is the vin on the tranny. The 4th, 5th n 6th will tell u if it's an ap1 or ap2

There is no tag. I was told this eng/trans came from Japan. I need some way to look at the outside of this tranny to see whether it is AP! or AP2. Do they look exactly the same?

They do look the same except for the tail flange where it bolts to the driveshalf. Ap1 are smaller which uses 8mm bolts n Ap2 uses 10mm bolts.

So, regardless of whether you call the chassis an AP1 or AP2, if the engine is an F20C in said chassis, it is likely that the matching transmission would be geared just like the AP1 transmission here in the US. Are you aware of any year JDM S2000 that comes with a transmission that has gearing similar to that which is found in 2004-09 AP2 S2000s here in the US ?

A JDM AP2 would still have the upgraded transmission, even though the engine remained the F20c. The AP2 transmission has revised synchros and I believe the output flange that bolts to the drive shaft is different. If I remember correctly one cannot directly bolt an AP2 transmission into an AP1 drivetrain.

The output shaft flange/hub is simple to swap for the chassis application... just an axle nut holds the flange/hub to the output shaft.
