VTEC vs No VTEC
My mate has a 97 lude 2.2 vtec only real mod sorta thing hes got is new pod filter, i got a 92 lude 2.3 si (no vtec), mines only real upgrade has been new fuel relay and im about to put a new speed by vectre pod filter in. I beat him off the mark at lights and my 1stG seems to have a little more acceleration and power than his but then he hits vtec and 2ndG and passes when his vtec kicks it gets a little harder to keep up with him.
Are there any cheapish suggestions anyone could recommend to help put me to a bit more of an advantage?
Cheers

Re: VTEC vs No VTEC
header and intake are the cheapest and easiest way to gain a lil hp, and exhaust helps, but for the cost of all that you could just get the h22

X2 I/H/E make good pwr/tq increases on the H23. There are
also a heap of other things you can do engine wise, as well as
things like lighten your lude. As for vtec vs no vtec most
people go for the H22. Its up to you. Personally i love the H23.

You won't find much noticeable power increases from an intake, go with aem if you're not trying to spend a ridiculous amount and don't want to lose power, tbh most aftermarket intakes lose power over stock. You can find the charts all over on the forums.
You can gain power with a header but it won't be any of the cheap ones you find. Like ZekeComa said, tri-y is your best bet but then again you'll need a tune and upgraded exhaust to see power gains worth the price.
The h23a1 and "most" h22s have about the same torque specs from factory.. so it could come down to your transmission being the reason you can leave him off the line. Is your lude an SI?
I've got the h23a1 in my car right now and I opted for the 37 more horses on a jdm h22a.. price of a good header, intake, exhaust and a tune is more than what it cost for my swap and you'll be extremely lucky to bump up that h23 37 horses with the aforementioned bolt-ons.

You can get away with using the stock block as long as the rings are still good with 8psi with a good tune pulling 225-250whp.
If you want to just rebuild the block without sleeving, then purchase the Mahale Gold series piston and rings, and then install and you will have reliable boost and can turn and tune that H23 up more on boost.
FRM sleeves are strong, the weak link is the piston ring lands that burn up due to the metalergy incompatibility between the ring lands and the FRM sleeves:
This is an H22a4 not an H23a1 block but they use the same FRM sleeves and please note that the H23a1 is a closed deck design over the H22a4.

the mahle pistons are great as drop in addition, just make sure the cylinder is in good shape before install and you wont even need to hone or scuff the cylinder walls before installation.
