vtec not engaging

vtec not engaging
i pinned it the other day in first, and right at 5,2 where vtec should have kicked in, my engine sounded like it had hit redline... kinda like one of the plugs had come out, but when i shifted into 2nd everything was normal, and vtec was there in 2nd. Could it be one of my secondaries not opening? I have no idea what it is and im trying to sell the car. Help me out
