Default Timing Question

Well I have to change my distributor tomm... it was making a horrible noise. I was thinking since I will have to reset the timing after I put the new one on anyway... I might as well advance the timing a few degrees?? This should give me a little more low end right? I know that's how it works in older cars... but never really read anything about it in my lude. Thanks.
