Default timing light...

I think i must be doing something wrong but i followed the directions word for word... anyways i cannot get the light to come on. I bought a timing light from napa first, after it wouldn't light up i returned it and went to pepboys and got a different timing light... same thing is happening, the light won't come on. I even tried it on my brother's car and still the same results. The 2nd light i got has a digital reading which isn't coming on, however, the lights underneath that signify whether it's in 2/4 cycle and rpm mode are all on so i know it's getting power. I got those lights to flash for a bit but that was it.. still nothing on the digital readout or the timing light itself. I hooked up the red clamp to the positive terminal on the battery, the black to engine block, and the inductive clamp to spark wire #1. Tried different spark wires , also tried red clamp to positive and black clamp to negative on battery, same results.
