Does it grind when he tries to put it into gear or can he put it into gear and then nothing engages?

Tell him to go have his syncros checked.

before you pull the tranny apart, check your clutch. if teh clutch is worn too far, the car won't read it as disengaged, and won't allow you to shift into reverse. try this, when you try to go into reverse, does it feel like you're hitting gear, or does it simply refuse to even enter the gate? if it simply refuses to enter the gate, it's probably the clutch. also try this, have your friend push the car backwards and try to shift into reverse, if it's the synchros, you'll be able to shift, if it's the clutch, you won't.

reverse is a fragile gear, and doesn't have a syncro in our cars. Tranny probably needs to come apart
