I was going about 40 mph the other day and my speedometer just droppped and the check engine light came on. The speedometer works every once in a while but it most of the time either doesn't work or jumps all over the place. Is there anything I can do to fix it or do I need to take it up to Honda to get it fixed? It is a 92 Prelude S
First step would be to find out what the code is from the check engine light. The problem is either with the ICM in the distributor or the speed sensor on the transmission.
That's right, 1st thing is to get the code (free at Autozone) don't forget to erase the code after. Most likely speed sensor is acting up or just check it first if it's loose connector.

not obd1, just jump the service connector and count the flashes from check engine light.
every long flash means count by 10's, short flash means count by one's. So, two long flashes followed by two short flashes means code 22. It will repeat these codes until the jumper is removed
then look up the code #

Yea a friend of mine showed me how to do that on my old Prelude that I had. Can I use any type of wire or does it need to be something specific?

$20 says its the vehicle speed sensor, on top of the tranny. does your odometer and tripometer not work either??
a faulty VSS is CEL code 17, btw.

I thought the blue wire off the ICM was only a tach reference and the speed was only determined through the VSS. I could be wrong though its been a few months since i was looking at that stuff.

Ok I went up to Honda today and they said the VSS is gonna cost me $126
But I went on ebay and saw a bunch of them for old Accords and other Hondas for much much cheaper. Will one of the ones from old Accords fit my car? My motor is the F22b single cam 5 spd. Thanks!
