Default Shifting Problem

I just got a 1990 Prelude 2.0Si and under "heavy acceleration" it will hit the rev limiter in first then it shifts fine. I checked the tranny fluid and it was a little low about a quart , added tranny fluid still not shifting from first until I let off and get back on it. I have never driven an old car, am I going to have "learn where the car shifts or is this an actual problem. Also are there major problems I should expect? it has 132000 miles on it but it was well maintained.
Thanks in advance
