remote start
I want to get a remote start and alarm installed on my 97 prelude. What's a good model? What kind of bypass do I need to install to circumvent the key thing. How much and how hard is it to install?
thanks guys
thanks guys
Compustart is what I have. Its a bitch to wire, I advise to take it to a installer who knows specifically how to install a Compustart. I've seen so many I'll wired. You also need a spare key to get destroyed for the chip to get the starter to work.
Well first I hope it's an automatic cuz most shops won't do sticks. Viper 150ESP is a good remote start, the 550ESP is a good alarm with remote start. The DEI 555H will bypass the transponder. I would not recommend you try this without prior alarm install experience.

It has a built in pager to let you know if someone's been screwin with your car!
As for install.. they take a little while. Hondas are one of the easier ones, though the 555's are always fun to work with (sometimes they just like to be pains in the asses). If the shop you talk to doesn't have a 555H, the 555U works the same. If you do want to try it yourself, let me know and I can get you the wiring colors for your car.
wow... thanks for all the information guys. I'm a do it myself kind of guy, but sometimes that can get me into some trouble
how much am I looking at as far as total costs installed?
btw---yeah its an auto
thanks again

if you buy it at a shop like circuit city or best buy, the listed prices include install. Now you'll have to pay $50 ontop of that at circuit city for hte 555U (or 555H) but that includes the install also

uh, you mean bypass the clutch switch (jumper two wires). There is a danger in this though. If you park your car in gear, or someone else drives your car and leaves it in gear.. well if you remote start your car either intentionally or on accident, it *WILL* drive forward. And if it's in first and your parking brake isn't on or is weak, the car will actually start up and start "cruising" in first gear. (the parking brake tends to keep it from starting, but it still lurchs forward as the starter kicks the engine over). I've seen this happen first hand with my old manager at a shop where we put these in.
Compustart is the only remote starter I would use for standard transmissions. Compustart has a safety device that will not allow the car to be started if is in gear.
Now for automatic transmissions I have to go with my favorite Crimestopper.

???? how the heck does the remote start know if it's in gear? The only thing i've ever thought of to work that out would be to weld or mount a plate on the shifter and then put another metal plate infront and behind the shifter to complete a circuit if it is in gear and keep the remote start from starting.. this would be way too much work though. The *only* sensor on the car to tell a gear is the reverse sensor, which is built into the transmission.
it doesnt. i had it on mine left it in gear one time and wammo now i have a r33 bumper instead of a black widow.. good thing i didnt park right behind the damn vette.. i was lucky and only thing that stoped me was a damn handy cap parkin sign... lol. lucky i didnt snap the starter off and have to pull out the tranny.
I will check to see exactly what the part is called and how it works. My friend has the compustart on his Talon 5 speed and it will not start in gear. I'll find out exactly on Monday and let you know or you can call Troy at (701)852-3318 on Monday.
You park the car, engage the parking brake, hit a button on the remote and exit the vehicle running. When you arm the alarm the engine shuts off. Now it is practically impossible to start the car in gear (unless you try real hard.) If something triggers the alarm in the interim (ie., you open the door) than it can't be remote started. This is how virtually every remote starter designed for manuals works.
The other way to do it is to install magnetic switches on the shift linkage to detect when the car is in neutral. Then you truly cannot start the car in gear. But of course that is DIY since most shops won't bother due to liability.

I got the compustar on my 5 speed lude, and i don't have to press any button while i'm exiting the car, it just sets as soon as i pull the ebrake up...that would suck if i had to press a button everytime...i guess it matters how it's installed, i had mine installed really well!
And mine doesn't start in gear as well!! My buddy had his installed at some cheeze performance shop, they were cheaper, but did a crappy install, and had his lude drive half a block down the street into someone's front lawn, it was freakin hilarious!! If you are gonna go with any remote start, make sure you get the place that has the most knowledge and don't look for the best price, believe me it's worth it! Installation is everything!!

....but on "this guys" CRX (5-speed) he hit the remote start in his driveway....and after it started to roll it wedged a trash can between the car and a brick wall....and sat there spinning the tire. Then after that "guy" sold the CRX to some dumb hick.....The hick thought it was funny to leave the parking brake off and let the car drive in circles just by using the remote. It turned out that the car went out of range, and crashed into one of there race cars.....ha ha Dumbass

but see, some people like me tend to park with both the ebrake on and it in gear. In your situation, the remote start would allow it to crank, and the parking brake would NEVER hold the car... honda's are the worst when it comes to weak parking brakes.

i like to park in gear too sometimes. like on hills, but if i do, i just can't remote start it, my car won't start, won't go anywhere!!!
